Which is more prevelent in your area, allowing or not allowing pre-measuring?

Yes the default is for pre-measuring

Allowing, it's more tactically complex.

Its stated in the rulebook that pre-measuring should be used unless both players agree otherwise

In a book that has a rule or 'inhouse' joke regarding the 'Birthday rule', I think this and any other question is a viable ask.

FWIW - we allow pre-measuring as well as placement followed by nudging while positioning.

Just under 1.4.2 of the rules you will come across the Ties rule (design concept) it allows the "player with the next birthday" to win ties.

I brought this up in the past and those with more years at this than the rest of us (and were buddy buddy with Jervis), state that they all had a good laugh about this rule.

IMO, it has no place in a rule set that is attempting to be taken as a serious wargame over and above a game like 40K.

Hence with such a rule in place I would take it that any question asked for a rule in a book that is quite clear is a viable question as there is precedence already for a rule that should not be , and from what I understand is not followed.

I've always played with pre-measuring and would much prefer to than not. It might seem odd at first if you're coming from playing system(s) that don't, but you get used to it and there are advantages to it IMO.

I had a good laugh about it long before I got to know Jervis.

I always took the Birthday rule as more of an attempt to help you get to know your opponent. Kind of a tip of the hat towards "it's a game, don't take it too seriously, you're playing against another person and should be having fun with this".

I've never played a game that didn't allow pre-measuring. I like it because it doesn't put new players at a disadvantage. After a couple of years you can have a good eye for determining distances, which is a little unfair if the other player can't. It's also more than a little unfair if the other player has a vision disability. That's something a ruleset should account for.

Yes, pre-measuring ... modern AFVs, weapons, etc., have range finders ... Of some sort ... even if it is to observe the fall of shot, tracers, etc. ... and adjust ...
