As the poll says, What size base do you use?

It seems that that 40mm are common and fair size but some items don't fit on it well. Like the Eldar Wraithgate from GW and the one that Sema made. Also if you like modeling like some people, they use the 60mm to put downed Titans or other War Engines. Put as mention before the Rules don't really say what size to use. Right now I use 40mm but soon I'll have a nice Wraithgate I need to base and when I start my Crons I'll need a Tomb, so I will most likely need the 60mm. But do I re-do all of my Objectives to match 60mm? Or maybe just have the Blitz be 60mm and the rest 40mm? But then what about the Wraithgate? Its not a Blitz!

So here I would like to Poll the community all over the world...

you have to be careful that Objectives are not mistaken for terrain. It happens alot, hence, the smaller the objective the better. 25mm is a good size.

I like 40mm because you can still make a little diorama without being overly large.

You were one of those mistaking it as a terrain feature! :D

As long as you agree to measure from the center during you're 5 min warm up I don't think it matters really.

Amanda Tapping is not a valid in-game objective. :-)

I use 40mm normally, and measure to the centre.

Yup, measuring to the centre makes the size much less of an issue.

I use Gale Force 9's "Take Action" Markers as they're easily to remember (flat counters were routinely shifted), aren't mistaken for terrain, and are IMO an almost perfect size (large enough without being too large).

There's another player locally who has a 60mm firebase for his Blitz, and he's mistaken it for terrain, at least twice. Then there's always the discussion of where to measure from. When it's 30mm or so, it's a case of who cares. When 60mm+ ones start appearing, it becomes a more important factor.

Well I have to disagree with this. If a 60mm Blitz is placed on the table, effectively you are saying that the objective is not on the table edge, but rather 3cm from the table edge.

At the end of the day, anything that confuses the base understanding of the rules is not a good thing. It is a shame that the main rulebook does not specify objective sizes as that would make such a thread as this a moot point.

Blitz is a different matter, since the rules already specify that it is to be measured to a discrete point on the table edge.

Measuring to the centre of other objectives just applies this same "discrete point" concept to all objectives.

while i wouldnt want 60mm bases for my objectives, but 40mm seems fine to me, big enough to stand out and have a bit of a scene on it, small enough to be fairly functional. of course, at the moment i use 25mm 40k bases with a dice blu-tac'ed onto it (also numbered) which is functional but not too pretty. still, it does in a pinch, till i get some others done up.
it seems to me that objective sizes, if it is a concern, should be brought up in the 5min warmup talk.

if aesthetics werent important, we'd be playing with cardboard tokens with alphanumeric codes on them, or coloured wooden cubes...

Aesthetics can be important, but I find the diorama objectives can also negatively shape a player's tactical decision. With the 60mm firebase I mentioned earlier, I've never seen him place the objective in a complex terrain feature, even when it'd make sense to do so.
