A unit can change direction at any point during it's move.
withdrawal moves can be in any direction - including (and very usefully near end of turn 3 into your opponents table half)

It can change direction. No need to bend the tape, you can also go 5 cms this way, then 10 that other way, etc. So a unit can go around an obstruction w/out having to double move for example.
It can move in any direction or it can even stay put as long as it doesn't end its withdrawal within 15cm of an enemy: "A formation making a withdrawal may make two moves. Withdrawal moves may be made in any direction, but if a unit ends the second withdrawal move within 15cm of the enemy, it is destroyed (it is killed while trying to escape!)."
