Me and Al (Hymirl) had a bit of pre tourney practice today and whilst discussing various things decided it would be great if you couldn't claim an objective after marching: troops aren't ready enough to secure an area and so on.

The reason for this is that Epic often becomes a turn 3/4 rush to get to objectives and this never feels very realistic! In short it would force people to play an EVEN MORE tactical game plan from turn through to turn instead of occasions when it is posisble to grab victory just by trotting half way accross the board as quickly as possible; games would probably last a little longer too making crushing victories less common in some circles!
Thoughts?

I could certainly get behind a "Formations that marched this turn may only contest, not control, objectives" playtest.

That lone Marine Land Speeder zipping across the battlefield to claim the Blitz is always annoying... and yes, that raises the question "Well, why didn't you protect your Blitz?"  *laugh*

Limiting March sound as a good idea. :agree:
* Not able to claim objective.
* Not within 60cm of enemy.
* +1 to Hit when fired upon.

It would results in more draws.

I have had the nasty turn 3 reversal where my opponent has Marched something a metre to grab an objective I had considered safely out of reach. I learned my lesson.

To be blunt, you know they can claim and march, so make sure your contesting/protecting something you don't want them to march onto and claim.

It's just another of the mind games and plans to consider.

Blitz especially should be protected.

I actually thought for some reason that marching troops couldn't take objectives way back when I first started playing this edition of Epic.

I think it's an excellent rule and improves tactical play. Marching should be a rapid redeployment, not securing an area. That end of turn three dash for objectives does not appeal to me either. Marching troops can't support firefights or fire flak so why should they be able to take objective?

I also had the same assumption for a good year or so of playing EA, that marching troops couldn't contest/claim objectives. It seemed so obvious.

I disagree totally, if you want the objective then hold it.

Epic don't have three turns, it has 4+ turns. With marching less effective it goes to turn four more often perhaps.

Not allowing troops to claim objectives on a March favours the gun lines.

I would not like to see this.

It also assist armies that will not last a 4th turn to try and close it off in the 3rd if they can. Let's not get back to 'points destroyed given games' that such a rule would encourage.

Not for me; that goes a little too far in my opinion! This proposal is just about not being able to claim whilst marching :-)

We seem to be drawn into two camps: those that see it as adding more long term thought to the game (I would also imagine that the proposal would see many games coming to turn 4 instead of 3), and those that wouldn't want to see a core rule of epic changed.
The point has also been made that it may favour some armies over others: i think it would just change the tactical 'mechanics' of the game: a gun line army would be able to better defend against a fast wizzy foe for a little longer but on the other hand that fast wizzy foe would no longer be able to perform it's - what some deem unrealistic - march grab moves that sometimes win a game.

In my mind epic is EXCELLENT at simulating tactical warfare right up until the end of turn 3/4 at which points all sorts of silly things can start happening! I'd like to see this more realistic style of play carried on into the end game in order to give a grittier, more 'real' feel to epic.  When objective grab happens it feels very gamey and i've seen cases where players have managed to get one up on an opponent who has otherwise (in tactical warfare terms!) played just as well if not better than them.

A few PLAYTESTS certainly wouldn't hurt and i'll give it a go next friendly game that i play :-)

Yeah, I want it more restricted (actually removed totally, but let's pretend I don't...).

If things that "pop up" at an objective can't claim it I'm all for it.
This include "just rallied" (done), aircraft (to do), marching (to do) and planet fall (not sure).

The only house rule that we use here is that aircraft on turn they land cannot contest victory conditions.

It is only for such fliers that have a transport capacity however.

People are aware of this are they not?

Stops things like Thunderbolts contesting objectives.
