A simple question from a cracking game with Alansa today:- firing at a target that is in or behind cover gets a -1, but does this also apply if the firer is in cover shooting out? We played that it did not apply where the firer is on the edge of the terrain, but that it did apply if the firer was inside the terrain. Thoughts?

Unless both units are in the same terrain feature, the terrain the attacker is in doesn't provide cover for/obscure  enemy targets.

1.8.2 Cover To Hit Modifiers
Units that are in terrain that is tall enough to at least partially
obscure them from an attacker’s view receive a -1 to hit
modifier when being shot at (see 1.9.5). The to hit modifier
also applies if intervening terrain obscures the target partially
from view.

You guys played it correct; otherwise you'd be penalised for being IN cover! I guess the difference is when you're shooting FROM cover you're not trying to hide!

We agree on the target being in or behind cover; but the question is whether the terrain that the firer is shooting from can count as "intervening" terrain?

I guess from a dictionary point of view, intervening means something between the firer and target that neither occupy, but it would be nice to get 'official' confirmation that shooting through the terrain does not penalise the firer per se.

We've never counted shooting out as providing cover saves.  We do it like Chroma describes.

I think Ginger means the -1 to hit modifier, not cover saves.

A target unit gets the -1 to hit modifier for cover if it is in cover or partially obscured by intervening terrain.  "Intervening terrain" is terrain that neither the shooter nor the target are in, but that lies *between* them.

For lines of sight purposes, the first 10cm of terrain are ignored, so, to an attacker *in* cover, shooting out, that cover "isn't there" for the purpose of line of sight, therefore, it's not "intervening", so doesn't benefit the target in any way.

Btw I know games who do this. But these are games where hiding is deliberately penalised because they're about action not tactics.
