Every so often I see a stray comment about placing blast markers on flak units so as to suppress them - I was not under the impression that such could be done!
How does it work? 1 - Flak firing is not affected by Blast Markers 2 - Flak is suppressed normally, but the rest of the units in the formation count for suppression. 3 - As flak is the only unit that can fire, it is suppressed by the first blast marker
Sorry if there is an obvious answer!

Ok, Flak can be suppressed by blast markers as normal. The slightly odd thing to get your head around is that units in the formation with the flak can still be suppressed even if they have no AA capability.
What people are probably doing is approaching the formation with flak in such a way that the flak unit is always one of the furtherest units in the formation and therefore suppressed.

2 - Flak is suppressed normally, but the rest of the units in the formation count for suppression.
This is the case. The only requirement for a unit to count as being suppressed is that the unit have a target in range and line of sight. It does not require the ability to actually fire to count as being suppressed, just range and LoS. That applies not only to non-flak units and aircraft but any other reason a unit that cannot fire at a target as well - slow firing on an off turn, no AT value firing at AVs, and so on. Even "Small Arms" can count for suppression, as long as the unit has range and line of sight.
Figure suppression normally to find out if an individual flak unit is suppressed. The only tricky part is that because a flak unit can fire at any point in the aircraft's move the "back to front" for suppression changes. If the flak is in range and unsuppressed at any time during the aircraft's move it can fire.
