6.1.5 Set Up Spacecraft & Garrisons (add to end of final paragraph)

Each player may start up to two of their garrisoned formations on Overwatch. These formations represent sentries deployed as a trip wire and to provide security at the objectives. They are assumed to have gone on Overwatch in their previous Action phase. That Overwatch is ?carried over? into the first turn.

Personally I think it was a nice idea (who came up with it?), but its fairly minor and not worth introducing.

I think the "garrison on overwatch" is completely unnecessary as an addition to the rules.  Garrisoning can be a great advantage all on its own if used properly.

If a general wants to put his garrisons on overwatch, then use your first couple of activations to do it.

I don't think it is necessary but I don't think it has/will cause balance issues, either.

So, are most of the "No, I'm not" votes because it is not needed (which I could agree with) or because it's unbalanced (which I would need convincing of)?

I think they are umbalanced. Lets take some massive IG or Ork formation I met as garrisons before. They can contest several objectives since beginning and if we put them on overwatch, they can severely limit movement of marines/eldar (usually NO GARRISONS) also. Ability to put some big formation "forward" is enough advantage for me.

Suggestion: limit one formation per objective may attempt to go on overwatch. Place the units as per the garrison rules. make a normal roll to activate, if passed place on overwatch and the unit must stay on overwatch for the first turn.

if failed take a BM as normal, but the formation can attempt to activate and take a turn as normal.

any interest?

To Chris ;

it was my idea , really because formations move so quickly in ?E:A ?that getting overrun in assault in turn one is possible , it seemed more accurate (historical ? :p ) for vanguard formations to be in a much higher state of alert than those formations to the rear.

It wasn't to give any army in particular an advantage .

Though this was the case when using the Siegemasters list with an unlimited number of garrison formations starting on overwatch (according to a number of posters) ...and very effectively by a beardy Ork army by Neal Hunt.

I hadn't thought to try and prove the idea at that point was broken, so.... well spotted Neal!

We have been using it for a couple of years now and don't usually field more than 2 or 3 garrison formations a side anyway so the current version looks okay .

And describing the formation as having went into overwatch in the ?previous turn seems the easiest and simplest way to get the concept of what is happening across.
