Is it the general intent of the character rules to allow multiple character upgrades to a single unit in a formation? It's been explained to the thick-headed (me!) that duplicate abilities don't stack, but that doesn't remove the possibility.

The Handbook Chaos list, for example, allows an Icon Bearer Upgrade and a Champion of Chaos upgrade. Can these be applied to the Chaos Space Marine Lord base? This would give a profile of

+1A MW, +1A FStrike, Leader*, Invulnerable Save*, Commander, Daemonic Focus, Augment Summoning

* Duplicated, and additionals have no effect.

OK

So 2 leaders in a unit allow 1 extra blast marker to be removed or 2?

One. A unit cannot have more than 1 of a special ability. Duplication of that ability is treated as if only occurred once.

Be carefull of terminology here.

A formation containing several 'leader' units would remove a BM for each 'leader'. So on a successfull Rally, an Ork 'Uge Warband containing '6' Nobz units would remove '6' additional BMs. This means that the 'Uge Warband can effectively remove 12 BMs at a time! ('6' due to the rally, and '6' by the leaders)

Be carefull of terminology here.

Yes, be sure to understand that, in Epic: Armageddon, unit means a single model, whether an Guardsman, a Vindicator, or a Gargant.  While formation refers to a group of units, that activate and perform moves/action together at the same time.

A unit can only avail itself of a single instance of a special ability; so an Ork Warlord added to a Nobz stand can only use one of the leader abilities on the stand. Same applies to things like inspiring.  Weapons/abilities that give a "+x" do add together, so a unit can make use of all multiple attacks, for example, granted by all its abilities.

A formation with multiple units with the same ability can make use of them all, though, sometimes, it has no practical effect, such as having multiple commanders in a formation.

Does that make sense?

Ginger's point that "Leader x2" on one unit is different than 2 separate Leader units is a good one.

Also, note that weapon stat lines on characters are not special abilities.  They are individual attacks and are all added to the unit as separate attacks with their own individual effects.  Hence, the 3 attacks as described by Morgan - 1 first strike from a character upgrade, 1 normal for the unit and 1 MW from a character upgrade.
