Hey guys, i'm designing my space marine army using the core rulebook army list. And i was wondering what the space marine commanders out there use to go against tanks or warmachines? Mainly Infantry and Thunderhawks is what my army is made up of so far.

I'm guess close combat is the best way... but my guesses are usually 50-50.

would assault squads with characters work as well as terminators? I know they wouldn't have the survival ability of term armor but i don't plan on then getting shot at much.

Terminators have, essentially, double the attacks of Assault Marines, double the survivability... and double the cost.

So, it's a question of quantity against quality... but either are valid options.

The idea i have is mount 2 squads of assault marines in a thunderhawk, one squad has a Commander. Land within 5cm of an enemy formation then use the Commander to charge both squads out of the thunderhawk and directly into the target.

I might be a bit fuzzy on the rules but does that sound like it will work? I'm not really used to the transport rules.

If you want to do a "combined" assault like that, you don't need commander to do it.

With both Assault Detachments mounted in a Thunderhawk, the T-hawk's activation for a Ground Attack affects all three formations.  The T-hawk ends its approach move, lands, the Assault Detachments disembark up to 15cm away, and then all three perform an assault against the target formation(s).
