Hi!

I sometimes think fanatic doesn't even know how to market the game to other GW players.

Unfortunately, Fanatic have little say in the actual marketing.

They make the toys & write the books, then its down to the GW main marketing team & other departments to decide coverage, pricing etc. When the product is made in its basic form, its almost entirely out of The Specialist Games Studio's hands  :{

Hi!

I hear ya Tuff.

I wonder why not just give fanatic total independence? IF they make money GW lets them continue, if not they scrap the whole thing. To give them reigns to produce games but then handicap all their efforts by giving them no real support is silly. I guess "fanatic" in GW lingo mean "wastebasket", where games that dont make a "gazillion" dollars go.....

I'm gussing that business is business! They need to focus WD on articles that will promote sales.

They must have pumped a great deal of money into LOTR for example, hence its regular section and promotion in the mag.

I'm not a regular WD reader, but do they cover other specialist games from time to time? I would assume that the players of these games are doing their collective nuts over four months of publisity(!) for EA.

I don't know why, but I assume that 40k and Warhammer are more appealing to young gamers who spend their pocket money in the shops. Is EA too expensive for young gamers? Is it the visual apeal of 40k or warhammer that makes it more popular? I don't know the answer to these questions, but GW marketing do - thus the focus for its flagship mag...

Furgie (can we get a spell checker in here?  :D )

As far as I know the demographics are roughly like this..

40K - Generally younger player
LotR - Also a gateway for youger players, but with a reasonable percentage of older Tolkien nuts
WFB - Older than 40K players on average, maybe its fantasy versus sci-fi themes?
Specialist games - Generally the most mature market as games aren't as mainstream.

Hi!

GW's business strategy for many years has been to appeal to a younger crowd and "rotate" games every 18 months or so becuase that target audinece is very fickle and lose interest in things quickly. GW no longer caters to "old hands" because there's not a lot of money there. Young impulse buyers are better becuase they buy things, play then drop the game for the "next new shiny thing" that pops up and moves on and GW replaces them with a fresh new group that needs to buy everything all over again.

Brilliant corporate practice. From a "hobby" point of view not so great.

40K truly is a kids game, that is why it sells so well.  Most adult males are playing golf, bowling, etc.  Let's admit it guys ... it's still playing with toy soldiers, regardless how well or poor the rules are written ... :L

Don't get me wrong Boyz, I like my Epic toys, too.  And I'll continue to add to my forces with E:A.  Of course I never pass up a chance to make fun of 40K !  }:)

UWZ ?? ???  Along with the Toy Soldiers theme.  A toy story of woe.   I have 100s of my mostly HO/00 scale WWII-Modern wargame AFVs, Infantry, FA etc. stored at my Aunt's house who at 91 passed away in Feb.  So I have no choice but to sell the lot, fortunately I know and I am in contact with a collector in a nearby town (Akron, OH), who will buy the lot. I'll have to make 2-3 trips !  As much as I would like to keep the models, and I played many games with many of those "toys" in my younger days, reality raises it's ugly head. On the other hand, I'll make some good $$$ for E:A ! :D
