GW is not all evil though. I have a great customer service tale of them....
I'd almost finished my Space Marine Battlebarge for BFG to find I was missing a single side bit. Quite peeved, I packed the whole thing up and went down to the store to plead my case. The manager took a look, complimented my paint job and when I asked for a replacemnt part, gave me a brand newbie off the shlef and apologised for the inconvenience. You cant get better than that!
The new bit of course went onto the almost finishe dmodel. The Battlebarge with a few bits missing is now 50% of the way through its conversion to a Chaos Space Marine Battlebarge, and it look AWESOME (sorry no pics yet)
Hope that story fills you with some hope

Jimbo - the enthusiasm of red-jumper staff in UK stores is a constant source of amusement for me. I tend to go to a variety of stores in the South, and the general attitude is fairly similar. I am often approached as I get in the door and asked what armies I collect and what I want to buy next.
It is often a good idea to say that you are looking for an Epic second edition metal Marine dreadnought or similar, just to see their expression. Also mention that your friends bet that you couldnt find it in a GW store, and you defended the store. One of the best stores, where this happens the least, is actually the Oxford St store.
The Mail Order and returns policy is one of the best that I have seen, and is the highlight of the company. Still, as an old timer I remember that you used to get a LOAD of free stuff when you mail ordered! If you bought a couple of igures, they would throw in the rest of the castings from the batch as well!

every order I have ever ordered from them in the last five years has been wrong
in my last they sent me a small flying base rather than a large one
though to be honest they did (in the past) correct the orders

oh I remember that, that was always nice

No kidding. ?I actually don't mind when they screw up my order as I normally get away with an extra mini or so. ?They have been better lately, but my favorite shipment of all time was when I ordered a bunch of stuff including 3 Tyranid sprues for epic. ?They didn't arrive in the shipment, and when I called about that, they said they would send them out. ?The next day I got them as they were shipped late, but that didn't stop them from sending me 3 more. ?THEN about two weeks later I got 3 more, HOW I DON'T KNOW. ?THEN about three weeks after that I got a box of about 100 sprues of Epic bases. ?Keep in mind with each Tyranid shipment I received the right amount of bases already. ?I didn't know what to do with all the extras so I stuck them on ebay. ?To be honest, I may have gotten more items from the original shipment later, but I can't remember which ones. ?I assumed they had a glitch in their ordering system. ?I just couldn't believe it. It was actually funny as hell. I got a kick ass deal!
By this time I knew I wasn't going to get rid of him been polite and was tempted to walk out, so
Me: I'm not going to get rid of you am I! |
There's a guy like that at a hobby store near me, and everytime he has to tell me all about the armies he plays and how great GW is for 20min. The guy is nice, but a freakin dork and exactly the kind of guy I try to avoid. ?He's done his song and dance for me about six times and doesn't seem to realize that I have heard everything already. ?I am almost afraid to walk down the GW section, fearing he's going to pop out from behind a display. ?Next time I am just going to have to threaten his life.
Hey Tas, I feel bad for about GW OZ. ?That really sucks. ?They sound like a bunch of assh@les. ?If it were me, I wouldn't spend my money on them, even if it meant going elsewhere. ?I have shipped stuff to buyers on ebay to Oz, and shipping wasn't that bad. ?It is actually worse to Europe. . . from Florida that is. . .
BTW, for those who haven't played Urban Terror online yet, do so. ?I am addicted. Much more rewarding right now than Epic.
Peace out muth@f#ckas!

Right. Well, I have had this sitting around for a while, but I decided to put together some rules and ideas for campaign/warbands in EpicA (believe it or not, inspired by the recent Path to Glory for Fantasy and the old Rogue Trader/Relm of Chaos books).
Anyway, the rules are here:
Crucible of Champions
I would be really interested in hearing what you guys think about these rules. They are not finished yet, and only the section for creating the warband, champion, retinue and followers are online. The rest will follow. This will include how to fight with the warbands, units which do not survive, new followers, rewards and gifts for the champions and his path to a Daemon Prince or Chaos Spawn - and the subsequent rise of a new champion.
Right now, I would like to hear about:
- Most interestingly for me, I would like to hear about any warbands that you guys roll up and put together. I cant even imagine all the possibilities that are present, so a few 'typical examples' would be great. It is difficult to get this balanced, but also variable! Even if you dont want to play this system, roll up a warband and let me know what you get.
- Any 'power combinations' that are potentially possible given the random tables - although this is less of a problem as the player actually has little control over the results.
- Any thoughts or comments about the system generally. It will obviously be linked to the current Chaos force list, and so could change as this does, but I dont expect the overall rules to change a lot.
Thanks. So, to start off, here is the warband that I rolled as a part of the rules set themselves. Unfortunately, the warband came out quite well, so I will be generating a second one later to illustrate the variation what can be achieved:
Champion and Retinue: Plyshtarin - Chaos Marine Champion, with the Leader, First Strike and Immune to Panic abilities Eight Chaos Marine Units Five Chaos Rhino transports
Alpha Formation: Six Noise Marine units Three Slaanesh Rhino transport vehicles Eight Chaos Marine Dreadnoughts
Beta Formation: One Chaos Traitor Arch Heretic unit Eleven Chaos Traitor units Seven Big Mutants
Gamma Formation: Five Chaos Marine Bike units
Zero mutation points, and ten advancement points.

Perhaps I can answer your points in a bit more detail now.
Casualties will all be simply rolled at the end of the game. They are permanently removed on a D6 roll of a 6. Other results bring them back for the next game. I could sort out out a 'recovery period' but this would add paperwork and complicate things.
Followers are rolled on the original follower tables, and the number is decided ona dice roll, modified by how well you did in the previous game. The same system for rewards and mutations.
This dice roll modification has cause a fair few headaches. I started with the simple 'one point for a win' system that Path To Glory used, but this seemed too simplistic for me. In the end, I have a system based on percentages, which should reward smaller warbands who take on significantly larger ones, and allow newcomers and underpowered warbands to fight and get something in return.
Chaos Marines have transports two thirds of the time. The only increase would be to to give them transports on a 2+, but I felt that this would pretty much make it very likely that Marines had them, and would reduce the variety. Is it that you feel that four in six are bad odds, or that you had a bad spell of dice rolling?
A 30-45 minute game for a beginning warband seems about right. I am quite happy with that. Thanks for your comments, I will get working on the next part of this.
