According to the guys on a german history forum Tankriding was re a legit tatcic by the Red Army and the Wehrmacht
Troopers rode on tanks into battle armed with SMGs (a side effect was that they also protected the tank against enemy anti-tank infantry). They drove right into enemy positions only until then they sat downand and attacked.
Such attacks where usually done at night because at day the casualties where very high because the tank with the infantry was a fire magnet.
The germans called them "begleit" troopers. They would ride on the back of the STUG SP guns during an assault with STG 44's and SMG's.
The soviets used this tactic more thhan the wehrmacht, but in the end, the tactic is the same.
Typically, staying anywhere near a tank was something you didn't want to do though. Those beasts drew alot of fire from all sources and you didn't want to be hanging around the hunk of metal when the shells started dropping.
Anyone who dismisses these acts needs to brush up on their WW2 and read into it a little more.
They happened. They went into combat that way. It was effective, but with hig casualty rates.
