I don't like the defensive fire concept. Seems very artificial.

Looks good at a glance save for the battlesuits having reinforced armor. This combined with the ubiquitous 4+ save makes them as durable as a Leman Russ or a Land Raider, which really isn't the case in 40k.
Come to think of it, my only grudge against E:A is that ALL AFVs seem to have a 4+ armour. From a Battlesuit to a Banenlade. There's no variation.

Good points, but I prefer the latter rather than a return to the old days of rolling zillions of dice to smash through that 2+ armour save.....

AP fire doesnt even effect a land raider, but in 40K, a (very) lucky glancing hit from a bolter could still do damage (if im not mistaken - I've only played 40K once....)

That's true, but since a battlesuit is classified as infantry you can't shoot it with AT weapons, so the battlesuits are immune to heavy weapons. And then there are the small arms used in firefight that DO affect Land Raiders, although these may well be said to include meltaguns in abstracted form so the point is kind of moot.

Nope, a bolter has a strength of 4. When shooting at vehicles you roll a d6 and add the weapon's strength. The maximum result a bolter can have is 10, which is well short of the 14 required to get a glancing hit on a Land Raider.

They could only glance vehicles with armour 10 if they rolled a 6, and 10 is the lowest armour value in WH40K.
However the majority of WH40K vehicles do have a rear armour value of 10, so if you can flank enemy vehciles you could potentially destroy them with bolters.
The land raider is one of the few vehicles that doesn't have a rear armour of 10 (LR is armour 14 all round).
In E:A the bolters (small arms) can still destroy land raiders in firefights.

For whatever reason my old OOP army only has 4 Gretchin stands (and thats after 3 infantry a stand). As GW does not sell Gretchin individually does anyone have any ideas on what I could use?
4 stands of Gretchin are simply not enough when most ork armies are runing around with 10+.

Hi Tadite, and welcome. I'm currently solving that problem, which I share, by building up my IG and space marines and ad mech (and previously Eldar)....and waiting for the Gargant BigMob (when was it, 2008, 2009?), and toying with all-Guntrukk-and-Strompa-and-Gargant armies, but as anyone (probably L4 ) will tell you, troops are essential. So I'm all ears - well, eyes - here too. I'd considered using the Space marine era boys, which are a little smaller, as some sort of weedy-orky-punishment-boyz equivalent to Gretchin, but I'm not convinced yet..

Tough question!
Now that Gretchin are finally worth having, noone has enough. We'll have to petition Jervis to put out a Gretchin pack for us Ork players!
In the mean time, I mix mine in with older Ork Boyz, Slaverz, Blunderpuss Gretchin and occasionally other figures to stretch them out.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

As the Gretchin are bigger in later releases, I too have been using SM1 release boyz mixed in with later grots. It works well and adds to the rag-tag look of a mob in general.
Try E-bay as a source for these.
