Locally to me Epic isn't on the rise, but that's ok.

The club I attend infrequently in North London has a slowly growing player base, and there is a nucleus forming in Norfolk that I'm tending via twitter.

I think the only time issues arise in keeping Epic alive is when newer players want things to be 'official'. Well I'm sorry but since GW have ended support there is more than one 'official'.

We have to accept that official will be defined by the group we are playing in, be that a group of friends in their garage to the teams coming together to play in the European Team tournament. These groups may be long term or short lived, and the 'official' differ widely between them.

As long as people play, and more importantly, enjoy Epic it will not die. A stable rules set, available proxy models and communities willing to work towards making lists as balanced as possible actually sounds just about perfect to me.

Thanks for the responses, everyone, and I'm glad this sparked some discussion.

While I do appreciate debate on whether or not Epic truly is dying and what that means to you personally, my point was more to find people who want to promote and proselytize and also brainstorm ideas on how to do that.

For example, right now I'm seeing if I can put some contacts to work to maybe post an Epic article on Bell of Lost Souls. I don't know if it will work or not, but it's just one thing I'm trying. I really liked the idea of an eZine. It sounds like a tremendous amount of work, and I'm not sure I've got the time to shoulder such responsibility, but, it could probably be done as a sort of collaborative effort if others were interested.

I think the beginner's section is a great idea. Also, somehow publicizing this site a little bit more couldn't hurt. I just read a comment on Dakka in a thread I posted where a guy said that he only found Tac Com by happenstance months after he started playing Epic. My experience finding the site was similar. This is a dark corner of the internet that isn't so easy to find.

Any other ideas?

Hi!

We used to run an e-zine in the early net epic days called Incoming!

You may want to pick Netepic's brain (Tom from Exodus Wars) since he used to run it.

It IS a LOT of work though. But I think people would contribute ideas and articles is someone decides to make one. :)

Primarch

Also Vaaish and Horizon might have some ideas or help. They run http://twolandscreative.com/warprift/, which is the Ezine for Battlefleet Gothic. I remember a few years back we got an issue every 2 months but now it seems they have gotten inconsistent, not because of the editors mentioned above but the lack of community articles and support. But I would love to see an Epic publication again.

I'm pretty new to Epic (in fact been out of wargaming for about a decade and only came back for 6mm).

For me the big draw was the (comparatively) low cost for playing with large armies combined with the integration of strategic assets into gameplay (rather than purely tactical ones). E.g.: inclusion of aircraft and spaceship operations, use of planetfall and objective based play, deployment of air assets as a matter of course rather than as some high cost special units etc. Hell the last game I played I used 8 valkyries, 3 griffons and 145 individual infantrymen (e.g.: 29 stands) in a 1k points game. Costwise I could get that on the board for about £30 or potentially less.

How much would that cost if that were WH40K 28mm scale?

Why not start a community supported drive to showcase epic and the current proxy manufacturers off on some of the more mainstream gaming sites? My personal favourites were the 'tale of X gamers' and I believe something like that could work for Epic to showcase the accessibility and comparative low cost of the game?

Use the minigeddon ruleset as an introduction point, combine that with some example lists and where and how to get the proxies for them and how much that would cost.

Combine that with a perhaps monthly update to each of those lists (plus pictures!) adding 250 or 500 points (crawl to 3Kpts) to each army again with links and costs and so forth and hopefully some battle reports (with pictures!). Compile those and see if we can't get that displayed on a prominent website like BoLS or Warseer or something.

I can put something like this together for imperial guard (Steel Legion) when I get home tonight as an example - though I have no battle report pictures...

Does anyone do youtube videos? Would they be willing or able to record a battle report and walk+talk through the game as a learning tool? Potentially using some community sourced £30 1000pt minigeddon lists? the very same lists we could source as suggested above?

There are You Tube videos and discussions of You Tube videos around. See this topic for the most substantive discussion, and a video battle report thread.

I assume you've not spent any time in the Tale of Epic Gamers section of the forum :)

Then a lot of the work has been done already.

The next step would be to write some of those tales up nice and friendly-like, ensure they're littered with pictures and try and get some of those tales in an obvious public place as advertising essentially.

Or, provide links to the already ongoing efforts? Less scripting, more freedom will probably mean more action.

I think more needs to be made of the European championship too.... I mean it's an international event! it should be well attended and there will no doubt be some beautiful armies on display, what better advert for how well the epic scene is doing than that?

I think there's absolutely no harm in this, I'd probably keep it pithy though. Possibly as a battle, but then with links to an edited version of a toeg for each army for people whose interest is piqued.

I'm glad there is still support going on around the world.

I live in Atlanta, GA where there are plenty of 40Kers in the area, but I only know of maybe 1-2 people who have models for EA. Sometimes it only takes one person to really get something going, and that's my hope here.

I just quit a job that prevented me from playing games for the last 3 years (glad that is over with!) during which time I discovered EA. I am now in a place thankfully where I can buy and develop several armies to demo and hopefully get others interested.

I don't have far reaching goals, but my overall plan is to simply get several sweet painted armies up and running, and then, trying to attract the local 40Kers into giving it a go, hopefully with some support from the 1-2 EA people I know. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't, but it at least gets people interested in the game. At worst I have several really tiny armies to put up on display, perhaps even get a handful or less folks to play with the armies I currently have. At best people really latch on and start getting armies of their own.

It's something I am really excited about and will have to see how the year turns out. With all the new 6mm stuff coming out it really is an exciting time for epic IMO.
