Gave it another whack and drew a map.

Thoughts/wishlist:

- Hills! The terrain palette doesn´t have any, IMHO hills are a must for blocking LOS whithout giving no-save Inf like IG cover saves.

- Larger, freely place&dragable text comments. I´d love to put a label on the board that is readable in a full-board screenshot, stuff like "chem factory" or "Tac Det 1". Terrain/unit labels are way too small. I can always do this afterwards for batreps, but it would sure be an informative in-game info.

My first Vassal map:

Closeup of a couple of SM/TL units, as seen on the map above.

Yes, we need hills and probably rivers would be cool too.

Is it possible just to use vassal to create batrep visuals?

Yep, I may use this as my camera isn't really good for batreps. More races needed before it is totally useful though.

Here's one I created earlier

Tim said he forgot to add the hills. He'll make an extension with more terrain.

Anyway, I made a thread for this kinda thing. Add your comments here.

Anyway, it'd be great if people familiar with epic could make some real maps with proper terrain placement and feature sizes, and put them on mediafire.

Not only that, but by customising the module you could replace the game icons with photos of your own minis. Imagine that!

Same could be done with terrain, all assuming one was insane enough to convert the pictures into .png files of the appropiate dimensions and feed them into a custom module. The sky´s the limit here, if you put in a lot of work you could basically look at a photorealistic representation, if your system can handle it.

Yeah. Epic is designed as a battle report program. Having dice and such is just a bonus.

I took Nicoch´s offer and had him walk me through the interface a bit. It was really a breeze, there is nothing to know or understand here, people, draw up a map or load one from mediafire (I´ll add a few there once I get the hang of things and when there are hills  :p), drag&drop the units, communicate via Vassal´s own IRC channel, Skype or smoke signs, roll dices and you are done.

Only provision is that you know what you are doing, e.g. familiarity with the E:A rules is required as Vassal won´t help you at all with that aspect.

I´ll set up a proper 3000 points battle SM vs. IG with units deployed for your viewing and gaming pleasure.

Thanks again to Nicoch!

We are playing a small 1500 Orks vs IG game right now, my opponent is currently grabbing some lunch and we are in Turn 1. If you have Vassal, drop by and join the game as an Observer, you can then comment on / spam in the game´s IRC channel and see the module in action!

Irondeath, Vassal is back up. They're changing hosts or something, so there's been hiccups lately.

How did the game go? Did you take screenshots for a batrep at all?  :))

Yeah, I made some screenies I´ll add later.

Fought two battles at 1500 points, both against players with little E:A experience but familiar with Vassal. A few forum members dropped by (Hena said hello as did Lord I, and Edgar-San showed up when I was discussing maps with Nicoch after the 2nd game). There may have been others from here and the odd passersby, people strolling through the Vassal modules with players getting a look at the action in different games.

I am quite eager to do a proper 3k game vs a regular player, preferably using some sort of voice communication. That way you don´t have to type all the thrashtalk into the IRC channel and just use that part of the interface for dice rolling. OTOH, this will make games somewhat less informative for the casual obeservers. Already badgering beelzemetz and Warphead to find time for a game these days, that way we could use standard phones for the talk part.

IG have won initiative and blew a Gunfortress and a Battlewagon from the Warband to the right, while Vultures rain Hellfires on the Stompa Mob on the left flank

After a Roadmarch, the IG SHT Coy is in position and subsequent Sustain, the Ork Warband on the right is about to get thrashed by engaging Vultures.

2nd Game, SM fight off an ork incursion, using their Whirlwinds to devastating effect vs advancing Orks.

Hey Irondeath. I'd be up for a 3000 point game today, perhaps. I've got skype or MSN for voice chat. I'll try and log online to vassal at 4pm GMT (there abouts, no promises of puctuality!)
