Quote (primarch @ 03 May 2006 (01:44)) | Quote (Dwarf Supreme @ 02 May 2006 (09:55)) | I would like to see it, but D10s for Epic, or any other GW game for that matter, will never happen. One thing that I started working on many years ago (and should dig out and resume work on) is rewriting the Titan critical hit tables to D10 to make them a little more resilient. I've never liked the fact that once you strip away the shields, you can kill a Warlord from the front simply by rolling a "6" for critical damage on the reactor table. A 1-in-6 chance seems too high to me. |
Hi!
Thats what I did in Heresy. The d10 makes damage tables and such give titans more resilience.
Primarch | One thing I don't like about the D6 thing,is that the armour value have to be relative to the die. i.e. no higher than 6 armour value. With this in mind on the D6 system SMs armour of 5+ is the same as some vehicles. Now if you used the D10 system you could give vehicles a higher armour value(to include war machines/titans). I know that GW is not going to change the D6 system, why should they? It's my understanding that they would just like to dump the game, but I think some of you are whats keeping it afloat...I'm here to join you.

I have to go with Oreso on this one ... we experimented with other die types and didn't really see any advantage. But added more detail which in a system that is already rich in detail, just was not needed. And I like detail ! However, if a weapons system is too fragile, like a Titan, then maybe it needs to be re-stated ...

Quote (Hena @ 03 May 2006 (04:46)) | But I do think that the larger dices would allow more minor variations. Eg. stormtroopers to be better than IG and worse than marines. Veterans to have smaller bonuses and such. | True enough - take SOB for example. Tougher than Stormtroopers but less tough than Marines. Bit of a problem there, you've got to go with one or the other...

Quote (Hena @ 03 May 2006 (01:46)) | Any real RPG player has collected dices. | You mean like that large bucket of dice on the shelf in the storage area?

So for now, I just say they match Marines.

REmember - on a d6 ; 7 = a 6 followed by a 4,5,6. 8 = a 6 followed by a 5,6. 9 = a 6 followed by a 6 ... that always worked for us ! (I'm so Old School !)

Also remember, D6's stop rolling a lot faster than dice with more sides (and it's easier to tell which side is up from more than a few feet away).

It's not for when I roll, it's for when my opponent rolls. Observation tends to keep people honest (especially those young 40k players, the cheats ).
I like plain white D6's with black pips - it's easy to tell which side is up, which dice are cocked, and what the result is on each die (the pip patterns are easier to recognize from various angles).
D10s are fine on smooth, hard table-tops, but on a battlemat or on flock with assorted terrain in the way, they are more of a pain.
That being said, D12s would be okay (even though they use numerals and they roll forever) because it is easy to tell which side is up and which dice are cocked.

Bottom line, favorite die choice is subjective in the end.
