I faintly remember reading those old WD articles as well, and as far as I can recall they captured the "feel" (which is of course very personal thing) of the Imperial Guard sledgehammer quite well. By any chance, is there anyone who could scan or otherwise post them to the net? - pardon a new member if I'm inciting someone to a copyright infringement, just thought out loud...
In my personal opinion albeit shared with many others, I've always thought that the Guard has been patterned after old-style Soviet model - rigid, inflexible, devastating. Had fun in military training reading summaries of "excepted tactics and manouvres of the adversary", which basically stated that in Soviet (and, in my opinion, Guard) doctrine the smallest independent (manouvre?) sub-unit is a battalion. Not much flexibility there, nor company teams or task forces...but who cares, if you can roll 30+ T-80Us, sorry, Leman Russes over your hapless foe?
In addition, I've always liked the idea of fielding a complete tank regiment - that's why I play Epic I guess - we'll see what happens when I get around to painting those 50+ Leman Russes I still have in storage...
(notes to self: wear a helmet to the game, DO NOT give opponent easy access to any blunt instrument, get riot cuffs "just in case", if he offers you a beer after the game have him take the first sip...)
That's for the topic, being the aforementioned new member I think it may be nice to introduce myself somewhat, the "Interests" line being as short as it is. I'm 22?-year old student in Helsinki University of Technology, technically in my third year but practically still in my first . Had enough of the Finnish Defence Forces after two years in home and abroad, but reapplying for international missions seems only a matter of time and money (more specifically, running out of- ), so HI! to all other current and former "swords and shields", wherever you are from.
Been playing wargames for almost ten years, mostly GW stuff but some others also. I like hard and fast rules - if I play a game simulating a 30-minute firefight, I most certainly do not a) have time or b) want to spend six hours on it! Favourite games are Epic 40,000 (Heresy-era World Eaters, Guard, Ultramarines, Orks) and Red Poppy/White Feather (aka Company Commander), very simple and fast but extremely entertaining game of WW2 tactical combat.
That's it about me, I'm looking forward to participate in forums and in Epic Armageddon - the game what may be the last, best hope of finest game series the Games Workshop has ever produced.
