the other thing with basing is that it can help remove any ambiguity as to line of sight/LoS blocking etc.... 'your shadowswords can't see the gargant, the buildings are in the way!' 'they can see the tip of his gun poking out, I'll take the hull down but they can definitely see part of it...'

if everything is based you can say in the 5mm warm up that you're playing base to base for LoS then that removes the ambiguity quite a lot, and also helps to standardise some of the many different shaped and sized models in the game (GW vs FW thunderhawks spring to mind!)

I agree Jimmy, though as Markonz says, DWWFY.

Excellent feedback guys. Along a similar note what glues do you use for the bases. I've always heard wood glue is a good option. And does anyone have an opinion on sealers? I have heard going gloss first followed by a dull coat is one way to do it. Any recommendations on brand names? Thanks as always!

I use Loctite. Drys clear and bonds in a few seconds. Super strong so I never need to seal it

Loctite's the best! I use it for bonding metals and plastics but hadn't considered it for basing due to it being relatively expensive. Will have to reconsider potentially.

I think that basing of all units should be mandatory in tournaments. For the same reasons that KIC stated.

I'm a big fan of Litko's bases, like this one:

For 6mm, I recommend getting the 0.8mm plywood. I've found that's the best way to go for these little guys. And it's surprisingly sturdy, particularly if you've added some basing medium like Vallejo Sandy Paste, which strengthens the base.

I never used to be a fan of mounting tanks, etc. on bases, but I think I'm going to try it as I'm coming around to the idea.

Mounting small tanks such as rhinos on UK 2p pieces looks pretty good to me. I think it makes them a bit more sturdy and less likely to get accidentally knocked out of position. Dreadnoughts could go on 1p pieces, but can't remember off the top of my head if a 1p piece is within legal size limits for basing.
