Yes, the solution with commanders allowed to choose to be intermingled would be very nice and also handels a small boost to the ability.

I remember that being discussed. Always thought it was a neat idea, certainly a boost for armies like Guard. I beleive it went something like after the first defensive units ZOC is entered (it didn't count for a straight FF, I think that had lots of problems when people tested it and since it didn't work for shooting, was left alone) the defender has the option of any commander in the defending formation declaring its formation intermingled with another with a unit within 5cm. The attacker can then decide wether to intermingle any further formations, then continue the assault as before.

but in my experience mutually supporting blobs of formations don't get engaged!

No, they get clipped, and dragged out of mutual support range...

You only need to get into range of one unit with enough to beat that, like MikeT did against my Spiders and Titan at the EEC.

Surely if the spiders were in B2B with the titan (not a bad idea for the cover) then there would be no way of clipping the Spiders with the titan intermingled without the titan consolidating more than the width or length of an infantry stand?

Even with a clip you'd have a unit strength of up to 14 and up to +3 for inspiring, first strike and a 4+ save! It just sounds like you were incredibly unlucky! I'm not saying commander is easy to use like inspiring or an extra attack, but it's easily the most powerful if you pull it off.

Personally I use a lot of mech infantry which when mounted (ready to engage) is extremely difficult to clip.

The spiders were all b2b with the titan, which meant that Mike was able to put three bases juuuust in range of a single spider, without getting inside 15cm of the Warlock. They were literally hugging the Titan, but when the necrons came along and started shooting, it just stood there and picked its nose.

With the counter charge most of the spiders got to attack, but the reason they were hugging the titan was that they were broken and (I think) down to one exarch or maybe even the autarch. Lost the assault, formation wiped out.

The point is that, yes, even with clipping counter charges bring in significant help from the rest of the formation, but it leaves other intermingled formations totally out of the fight, even if they stood on top of the target formation.
