Hi guys, I use a variety of different boxes, but the best value are the metal tins that you get free with magazines which also do collectable cards. The tins often come with the first or secon issue of the magazine and at a reduced initial price. This has lead me to getting Jackie Chan/Doctor Who/James Bond boxes for under £2 each.

As they aren't as deep as box files I can store vehicles on the bottom and plastic Infantry on the underside of the lid. A layer of bubble rap inbetween the two and these can be transported at any angle you like whilst taking up lass space.

I use either magnetic tape or sheets stuck to the base or small magnets. The magnets can be quite powerful and allow for greater weights to be stored.

Presentation Buiscuit tins can also work in a similar manner

I started with steel bases and magnetized boxes.  I've moved to the opposite -- in general both work well, except when pieces of flock or flotsam prevent a full contact between the magnet and the steel.

I find it is easier tto brush sand off the magnetic sheeting on the bottoms of bases than off the magnetic sheeting on the bottom of a steel tray.

I've started using covered cookie sheets as the steel medium.

I have some Kling paint (which should attract magnets, but I haven't tested it yet.

Staples sells business-card sized magnetic sheets (cards) at $22 per 100, enough for 800+ Epic bases. Fiskars paper cutters (and their 25mm round hole punch) work well to cut these sheets.

Lots of good suggestions here which I'll look into more and think about, thanks!

The cases that Rug likes are the sort I have and are seeing models chip/get damaged in (maybe I just don't pack enough extra foam in to each rectangular hole with the model(s) in it. The sort that The Real Chris and Man of Kent have recommended look better, but I still wouldn't trust resin Tau and Grey Knight models in them. Then if I'm going to aim to make some kind of magnetic case system for those models then if it works I may well try to adopt it for all models.

Transport aside I'm worried about how the Tau and Grey Knights models will survive game play handling, one poor Kroot's feet fell off when I picked him up (and another couple were broken in their bags). I know some people glue banner poles to their Tau bases and pick them up with that, but personally I'm not a fan.

I'm musing on two different possibilities at the moment:

a). model my Tau as fighting in the same jungle terrain as my Exodites will be - have lots of decoration and jungle trees growing up on every base and pick them up by the trees. Like below, particularly the third one on the right (foliage will be added later). This would be particularly fitting for Kroot too.

b). when on display in my cabinet or to photograph etc I don't want anything sticking up that shouldn't be there, but gaming it could be useful. Since I plan to use 25mm round BoFA bases I have with some thin metal underneath, what if I epoxy glue small magnets onto the ends of pieces of cylindrical clear plastic rod (say 2-4ish mm diameter) specifically leave a flat-ish area in the middle or somewhere on the base and then magnetise it there when gaming so that the clear plastic rod sticks up and the base can be picked up by this (sort of the shape of a flying stand shape). Could this work? Only downside I can see is they would have difficulties going underneath thing as the sticky up rod could get in the way e.g. a Manta or overhanging terrain, but that shouldn't happen very often and they could always be detached if needs be. I would need to find magnets strong enough to pick them up with, but weak enough not to get overly excited about magnets on neighbouring 25mm bases or other players metal watches brushing past, etc.

Thoughts?

Slightly off topic, but those Exodites look fricking awesome!

Is there a log?

Another suggestion is to double-stack your bases: I find it it easier to pick up the stands by the stands when they are over 3mm deep.

This is a particular concern with magnetized bases, because it will take some pressure and finger-pulling to break the magnetic attraction (at least if your system works).  It is preferable to exert that pressure on the bases than on the miniatures, of course.

NB: GW's standard beveled base (for WH40k/WH/LOTR) is exactly the wrong approach, because it is hard to get a grip on the beveled side.

Thanks! No log as yet, but there definitely will be as soon as I get through this busy period of uni work and have time to start getting going on them properly. I've added, changed and got rid of some bits since and it's all blu-tacked with some proxy squiggoths for the moment, but see here for an army photo.

No one has mentioned this, so I will.

Renaissance Ink sells Paper Steel, which works pretty well for gluing to the bottom of bases.

http://www.renaissanceink.net/index.php?body=bases.html

It's 10.95 for 2 standard size sheets of paper of it. This is enough to do a 3000 pt army (easily). It cuts easy with scissors, and sticks to magnets almost as strong as the thin steel bases.

For infantry bases (and other plastic light weight pieces), I don't think you can get much better.

I also mounted my IG tanks to FOW bases, and then super glued some to bottom. I then put sheet magnet in the bottom of those trays you use for fishing lures (and spare screws/nuts). You shouldn't shake the box they are in (and don't drop it either), but they handle the normal bumps of traveling just fine.

This is why I do not have the magnet sheet going all the way to the edges on my based strips. Just a little pressure on one side and the other side pops up for easy grabbin.

Hi guys,

This is just the beginings of a storage related idea that perhapps you can fill out for me?

It doesn't involve magnets but instead rubber/plastic bristles of a failry stiff nature which models could be pushed down in between. I think this would work great for any stands of troops and lighter tanks as the bristles would allow a bit of freedom but hold models in place firmly enough to stop them getting damaged. I haven't really given this a lot of thought yet and I'm kind of struggling to picture/describe it properly.

Has anybody got the gist of what I mean and know of any suitable sources of bristly type material?

The closest thing I can think of is this

And this wonderful picture of the concept being acted out in true scale
