OK, Keith has now responded to the issue of not being able to log in (he even created a new forum for technical problems - we have a voice!  ).
He is working on the issue, and it is mostly US visitors. In the meantime, he suggests that you access the forums from here:

Let me know if there are still problems.

I have never had a problem with the forums, maybe it is something to do with where in the world you are accesing it from or what time? Any thoughts?

From what I understand it does have something to do with the link between the USA and UK GW servers but I do not have details, just what the GW Admin said.
