So after several years of playing the game we came up with a situation we had never experience on Friday night!

A units of scouts engaged a detachment of infantry, because the scouts were so stretched out they only had one stand in range to FF. However, they did have a friendly unit close who could all provide cover fire. After casualties were worked out and the dice rolled it ended up a draw.

When we started the next round of combat we realised that the two formations were no longer within 15cm they were about 30 cm apart as the nearest scout stand had died.

What should happen in this situation?

Possible ideas that we had:

The combat ended as a draw as neither side could do anything - This is what we did in the end.

Combat continued as the supporting units could fire.

As no one could fire we simply re roll the dice and see who wins again.

This is covered in 1.12.5
as the only scout unit directly involved in the assault had died the attackers should have automatically lost the assault.

Quote:
If all of the units in the defending formation have been killed
and at least one attacker survives, then the attacker wins and the
assault is over (go straight to 1.12.8). If all of the attacking units
directly engaged in the assault are killed then the assault has
stalled and the defender wins (go straight to 1.12.8).
‘Directly
engaged’ means being within 15cm of a defending unit after
charge and counter-charge moves have been completed. If even
one of the original attackers that were within 15cms of the
enemy survives, then the attack has not stalled. In any other case,
both sides can call on support (see 1.12.6).

I believe, if memory serves, this is part of the 2008 rules update so the physical rulebook does not have this part.

Yes. If all attackers within 15cm are dead, the attacker looses. If all defenderes with 15cm are dead, go immediately to "work out the result".
