Hi guys, I used to play Epic a few years back when Armegeddon was newly released and until Specialist Games started to break up.  What rules are you guys playing?  Are you playing Armegeddon rules or Net Epic?  I really enjoyed playing Armegeddon but remember struggling with my marines and doing ok with my Eldar.  JohnnyRico

Hey there Johnny, welcome to the forums

I play Epic Armageddon myself, fantastic game that it is. GW may not have given the game official attention but development has continued apace here with excellent results - see the Raiders supplement (Necrons, Dark Eldar and Tank Guard) or the (in progress nut not far off finished) Siege supplement (with rules for Death Korps of Krieg and Mossinian rebel PDF) for examples. In some ways I see now as something of a golden age for epic, for us dedicated fans here :)

I went to an EpicA tournament at Warhammer World Nottingham last weekend actually, with 18 attendees and 3 new players. Space Marines can get a little tricky to learn to get the best of, but they are actually regarded as possibly being the best army by top tournament players.

Johnny,

Yep all EPIC tournaments, within the UK, use EPIC Armageddon rules with EPIC UK additions ( www.epic-uk.co.uk ).

The EPIC UK website is a 'one-stop-shop' for all information about tournaments within the UK; it's an excellent way of meeting like minded gamers from all over the UK, play a copule of games, and have a chat.

Also on the EPIC UK website are all the 'UK tournament offical' army lists which include a new EPIC UK Space Marine book, Ork book and many many more to come, so watch this space.

Any questions please feel free to leave a post here, or email me.

Thank you

I'm playing Armageddon and this is the first edition I've played.

I find that marines are really hard to use when you are trying to build armies that exist based on 40k armies. Like tacticals, rhino detatchments, etc aren't great, but if you use thunderhawks, warhounds, terminators, scouts, bikes, land speeders and the other good stuff then they are really quite good.

Most here play Armageddon, although there is a strong Netepic community too.

Many also add either the EpicUK tournament army lists, or the NetEA army lists (which were developed here on this forum), to add extra variety.

Welcome (back)!

?   :oo:

I like my tactical units. When everyone else takes what is fun and get's out maneuvoured, you tacticals being the 'good at all yet great at none' can really bring home the 'bacon'.

Tactical Formations aren't as useful point-for-point as Devestator Formations, IMHO, but make good formations to attach a Supreme Commander to, as they take a while for the enemy to kill!

I wouldn't take more than one Tactical Formation unless I was playing 'fluffy', or they had a 25pt points drop, mind you.  :)

Have a read of what some of the top UK guys run over on the EpicUK tournament site. I find there's a big gap between good lists and bad lists with space marines. I'm not really sure if this exists with the other lists.

I play Armageddon almost exclusively these days, since my usual NetEpic opponent wanted to learn E:A in the hopes of gaining some converts from his 40k friends.

playing 'fluffy'

lol, what's that, when you play for the drama as opposed to trying to win? If so, then I always play fluffy

Thanks for your replies guys.  I was interested in the Uk Epic site and will look at this more closely.

I have a painted Ultra Marines army (about 6K) plus enough unpainted figures to make to 20,000 pts.  I am thinking about going with a White Scars army.  Lots of movement and 8 bike squads.  Does anyone have any experience of playing with these?  I was thinking about X2 squads of bikes, land speeders, a couple of Warhounds and assault troops.  Try to play a fast moving army that is not airbourne.  Maybe some predator tanks... need to look at it more carefully but just some initial ideas.  A lot of the chat I have seen seems to say that you need to play airbourne to do well.  That is not something I would like to do.  Anyway, the point is... are White Scars a viable army to play?

When I play 'fluffy', I play to win within the restrictions/recommendations of the background, instead of playing according to win only restricted by the army lists.

Generally with Marines that means taking a battle company as the core of your army:

- 1x Tactical Formation
- 1x Tactical Formation
- 1x Assault Formation
- 1x Devestator Formation

(Because Marine armies are 90% of the time supposed to be a Battle Company plus some extras)

Or for a Steel Legion army, that'd mean taking much of your army as Mechanised Infantry Formations (that being what the Steel Legion is famous for).

Etc.

It's subtly different both to playing only to win, and to playing purely for the awesome spectacle.

Yeah. Agree.  :agree:

I guess that is a downside to tournaments - you do not get to chose who you play

Assault troops in Epic are costed to be points effective used out of thunderhawks in air assaults - on the ground they are sub par. Otherwise WS armies tend to have more bikes. Also you need hunters and/or thunderbolts in there too.

Yme-Loc has used white scars at a few tournaments. If he doesn't drop by send him a pm.
