I was wondering the other day about the division of labour within the Imperium, in specific I was thinking about the role of the Deparmento Munitoirum (sp?).
My understanding is that this would be the part of the imperium responsible for providing munitions (presumably they also design, test and invent them as well) to all combat troops, Space Marines, Tech Guard, Imperial Guard, Imperial Navy and Sisters of Battle.
So if this is true where do we stand on energy weapons such as las-guns and lascannons?
The Imperium seems to me like the sort of petty beauracracy where the charging of lasguns would be jealously guarded as the divine right of the munitions department. Or is that just me?
Anyway I'm wondering if anyone knows of any fluff about the Departmento Munitorium.

One of the Gaunt's Ghosts novels featured a Munitoriums officer who had sent the regiment the wrong pattern las cells; apparently "Standard Pattern Las Cells" depends on whether your homeworld has Standar Pattern 3 or Standard Pattern 5 lasguns.
AFAICT, charging of lasguns isn't the department's job: anyone can do that on the fly. It's the replacement of cells that have failed, or more likely, discarded during firefights, that they'd be responsible for.

Almost, but not quite. The Departmento Munitorum is only concerned about logistics, not production. The production is the sole responsibility of Adeptus Mechanicus. Although there are factories elsewhere than in the Forge Worlds they are still supervised by AM.

Every warrior and vehicle crewmember is taught the weapon/vehicle maintenance rituals and some basic repair rituals in order for the Imperial war machine to work at all. However, anything whic requires more complex rituals has to be done by the AM so that the spirits of the weapons/vehicles are handled correctly.

Not forgetting that the munitorium are also responsible for delivering foodstuffs, loo roll and cigars as well as SHT's and ammo, sounds like a massive undertaking.....and could make for some amusing scenarios

Like when the guardmen go out for a curry and Eldar kidnap the munitions officer?
