There was a short story in Heroes of the Space Marines that fell between the two. That and Nick Kyme's story from the same book were interconnected as well, they were good. Also the Throne of Lies CD was fun too. Definitely makes you think that Night Lords EA army is viable fluff-wise.

I'm reading Salvation Reach right now, it's been hard to put down after page 50. :P

Salvations reach was good i really liked it. As far as the Night Lords EA army, i've decided when i get home i'm going to work on a list for them<E&C recommended me make a list for orks but i decided i would try my hand here first>. Also i have an imperial guard list i want to work on for an army i'm going to be painting up soon. I looked into alot of the fluff you can find on lexicanum and other sites about the night lords and feel like their style of play is not yet represented with the chaos army lists we have yet. I will start it off as a fan list and hopefully i can help it move forward to an offical listing, which should be fun and rewarding by itself.

For W40K I went for Night Lords and Iron Warriors as my CSM armies- sort of yin and yang in approach, with my Night Lords having all infantry and lots of Raptors/infiltrators. I am not sure how well that would scale u to Epic scale but am interested to see what you will come up with. Will you be taking Red Corsairs as starting point?

I'll be using the stats for sure, i will be cut copying info from websites to describe my thinking of how if feel they should be protrayed. Also i will be using the books somewhat too for the mentality behind what it is to be a Night Lord. For instance the army will have no demon support, and i read somewhere that Night Lords still fight to almost exactly how Astartes armies fought pre heresy. Night Lords have their own flavor, but i am seeing almost a codex Astartes army with slight modifications. I my self have wanted a chaos spce marine army that doesnt use demons and fights closely to the style of their imperial counterparts.

Anything that can show their hit and run nature would be cool.

Hi Dave!

I just finished Dead men walking by Steve Lyons. It's probably the best read I've had from black library, so I can really recommend it!
In fact I think I'm going to have to try and get my hands on his other black library books.

cheers

Ok I hope you like it then! ;)

It's not overcrammed with action but a bit introvert into the main character and his thoughts. That's probably why I liked it. Probably not everyones cup of tee though.

Cheers

The 40k based novels I've red so far (Horus Rising, Galaxy In Flames, False Gods etc.) have been a bit rubbish IMO. I just think the writing style is a little bit aimed at kids. The problems is probably that I've read some superb sci-fi over the years, such as Hyperion and Endymion bu Dan Simmons. I've become a bit of a literary snob after reading those.

I just re-read the Hyperion series this summer. It still is one of the best sci-fi series I have ever read.

As for BL, I found the Eisenhorn series very entertaining. I loved the Cthulhu references in Xenos.

I can't stand the horus heresy series, i think they are utter crap compared to the other novels in the BL line. The gaunts ghost books are really awesome, as well as Eisenhorn and ravenor. The iron warrior books are pretty freaking sweet as well. Double eagle is a must read, as well as titanicus. Stay away from son's of dorn, and any henry Zou book. But some of the best books i have read from BL would be the nightlords trilogy by adam dembski-bowden. I purchased the first 17 horus heresy books from a forum member read 6 hated all but the insight mechanicus gave into the mechanicum. i thought they where all slow and wordy.

The quality ranges IMO from really good (Legion, probably the best one written so far, Prospero Burns though was lamentably marketed) to enjoyable (Horus Rising, especially as it shows the promise of what could have been very well, Mechanicum, Know No Fear, First Heretic) to bolter porn (Decent of Angels, Outcast Dead, Fallen Angels, Thousand Suns, Fulgrim) to I WANT TO STAB SOMEONE IN THE FACE THIS IS SO BAD (Battle for the Abyss, most of the short stories)

Unsurprisingly Abnett comes out well while the rest is usually readable but nothing great. It's a fun diversion in between books with some substance.

Perhaps I enjoy the Abnett books as I prefer my stories of genetic super humans to be told from a perspective of humans (Prospero Burns) or have a strong human element to them (Horus Rising) and frankly the AL are just great with plans within plans and until then I've never read anything that made me feel some mystery. OTOH, the general grumbling that I seem to hear is First Heretic is crap but I had a good time reading it so YMMV.

I actually find the HH novels the best ones that BL puts out, because they are so wordy - usually that means character development and some extra work on the plot. Dan Abnett is probably the best HH (or all of BL for that matter - because of books like Legion and the Ghost/Eisenhorn/Ravenor series) author, followed by Dembrowski-Bowden, who has surpassed Graham McNeil IMO. Really, the close combat scenes in all the 30/40K fiction are pretty disposable. There's only so many times I need to read about the stink of blood and human flesh being referred to as "meat." Some of that blood and gore gets so excessive that it transcends blood and gore and becomes "blore". I've made the mistake of getting a couple of the Space Marine Battles series, and they just turned out to be unadulterated blore, with little plot.

The favorite trend of the BL lately seems to be to add in a chapter-size chunk of blore in the middle with that multipurpose plot tool, the Dark Eldar. Need some torture scenes that could make Saddam Hussein queasy? Have the DE pop in for a visit, torture the f#$k out of some space marine (so it lasts longer, them being superhuman) for 50 pages or so, and shazam! Pages dripping with blore. Hooray!

I'm sorry :'( :{[]

Some of the HH books are better then others but I read them mainly for the background, I mean we all know whats happens for the most part. I do love the Gaunt Ghosts series and Ciaphas Cain for its mockery of the standard idea of 40k norms if nothing else.
