I haven't played anything yet, but I enjoy creating new armies & chapters. One of my first tries (Crimson Suns) was published in Incoming 11:
http://www.netepic.org/EZINE/html/issues.htm

Nothing too original there, but at least I wrote the fluff myself.

I have several chapters in the works but these are proceeding slowly. These include Winter Lions (a "Finnish" chapter), Bear Claws (a "Soviet" chapter), Death Angels, Death Knights, Void Vampires and White Templars.

To elaborate a little. Winter Lions are commando and stealth attack specialists who favor constant harassing and hit & run attacks. They have a strong independent streak and have been denounced as "undisciplined" by some of the more conservative chapters like Dark Angels and Imperial Fists. This combined with using tactics similar to Alpha Legion has caused friction between the Lions and some Imperial commanders. Winter Lions were founded in the latest founding using stock geneseed tithes.

Bear Claws are the opposite of Winter Lions and trust in heavy weapons and artillery. They are regarded as siege specialists and have a cold and ruthless streak suspected to come from Iron Hands geneseed. Unlike Iron Hands they don't worship machines but still have an unusually high number of bionics and techmarines.

Death Angels are a mysterious chapter. Their progenitor is unknown and their homeworld is unknown. They are as fanatic as Black Templars and as sinister as Dark Angels and Mortifactors combined. I have yet to invent good fluff for them.  :(

Death Knights are a successor of Imperial Fists. Like their pogenitor they are devout Codex followers.

Void Vampires are the last Blood Angels successor founded just before the geneseed flaw was discovered. They are stabler than the Flesh Tearers but more unstable than the Blood Angles themselves.

White Templars are (surprise!) an offshoot of Black Templars. Originally one of the Crusades their Marshal started to have ideological differences with the High Marshal. Pointing out to the Administratum that the Black Templars are oversized he petitioned the High Lords of Terra to form a new chapter using his crusade. The Black Templars consider this to be the vilest of treachery and there have been a number of skirmishes between the two chapters. The Administratum nowadays makes sure that the White Templars are situated as far as possible from any Black Templars activity.

I had once tired to create an Imperial Guard regt.,actually a PDF using the history of the Finnish army during WWII. They were called the 3rd Karellian. Is that what you are doing with your Winter Lions and to an extent the Bear Claws?

Hmm. . . taking a trip down memory lane has brought many nice memories.

I think the first time I saw a beakie space marine was in Dragon Magazine I think. ?It wasn't a GW publication and I spent my junior year in High School drawing beakie marine battles everywhere I went and didn't know anything about them. ?A friend of mine gave me my first two beakie marine minis which were metal, but I painted them up as Colonial Marines in power armor for our custom Aliens game we made. ?Yeah, I can't remember who made them, but someone released some excellent Aliens minis based on the movie and we bought a lot of them.

Anyway, When I finally picked up rogue trader, I tried to make my marines as Dark Angels, but the green back then didn't work for me and I jumped to the Ultramarines. ?I have been primarily an Ultramarine boy since even though they are turning into the more boring of the marine chapters. . . ?:(

When I discovered AT, well, that just blew my socks off and I made a huge Ultramarine Army, as well as a rival Sons of Horus/Emperor's Children army. ?Man, those were the days. ?I had friends get into the other Chapters so we all had our own favorite until the other armies followed. ?After that, I think only two of us ever stuck with the marines period; everyone went on to Chaos, Squats, etc.

I think my favorite model back then was a custom Land Raider I made with Horus himself halfway out of the hatch. ?Custom banner as well. Horrible by today's standards, but at the time no one had seen anyone do that back then.

I guess if I were to make my own Chapter today, I think I could make something along the lines of the Ultramarines only much more noble-like. ?Maybe some kind of divine-like angle symbol. ?Honor, respect, justice, sacrifice, and all that BS. ?I like dark secrets and I'll always like the Dark Angels, but **If I was actually in a Chapter, I would want it to be a just/noble one I guess**. ?That may shock some of you. ?

I wish the 1st Company of the Ultramarines did something other than wear white helmets.  I think with my own chapter the uniforms would be highly decorative anyway, but you would also know a veteran or a hero when you saw one.  They would almost have a aura around them, something of a awe I guess.  Usually spending their time guiding the younger marines, but when the company came together as a whole it was serious business.  I also think a military unit of 1000 is so unfeasible that I'd have to give mine some extras.  Maybe instead of being a chapter with some splinters, they all form togther under this one during times of need.  Like five chapters worth, you mess with one you mess with them all.  Maybe I should work on this.

I loved the Emperor's Children back in the AT days, although today I think Black and Pink has got to go. ?I don't like any of their models either, so it's a bit of a disappointment. ?I don't like the fact that the Son's of Horus name isn't still around either. ?To hell with that prissy Abaddon, nothing is better than the original! :D

Man, those were the days. . .

Yeah, I am totally working on my own chapter right now and just learned a new word:

seraphim

I am going to use this as a type of veteran marine. ?Like in the first company. ?Definition wise they are supposed to be the first angels made, with three sets of wings. ? ?I am thinking that the basic chapter color is blue, but as you go higher up the chapter to the first company the uniforms become more and more white, so obviously the Chapter Master is pretty much decked out in robes and all. ?Hmm. . . ?I guess I might as well grab some Dark Angels in robes as my bodyguards. . . I'll comeback with all the goods after this weekend. ?I'll have to come up with my own army lists too. ?

I am thinking of my Chaplins being known as Messenger Chaplins.

oh yeah! The Name of my chapter is something like : the Archangels.

Oh yeah.  No scouts.  I hate scouts. If you're not ready u don't play.

See ya.

I'm thinking of including a lot of apothoacry and chaplain marines.  The theory being that marines showing any of the more disturbing tendencies of their traitor progenitors will be dealt with quickly, quietly and efficiently.  Also that harsh Imperial indoctrination is routine. Suspicion is an every day part of a Night Hunters life.

Hi!

I'm in the conventional group. I'm a big fan of the Ultramarines and am currently expanding the Imperial Fists.

At least for me GW has made sufficient chapter to keep me busy.

Yep. Winter Lions are Finns and Bear Claws are Soviet/Russian Chapter. Problem is, I have yet to figure out an excuse for the Bear claws to attack the Lions to conclude the fluff I've been writing. ???

Either way, Mojarn, those are good ideas for SM units. Being a "student of history", there is a lot of good stuff found in our collective past ...   :;):

I'm going to disappoint you. I'm a Dark Angels purist.

Though I remember a time long ago, when I was happy with inventing new names and color schemes, like black and gold Guardians of Darkness chapter...

I too have never invented an SM Rgt., I'm content with the BA, DA, UM, SW and "Sallys" in my Epic TO&Es, plus some Traitor Bns.  However, if you are so inclined, I say design your own units within the parameters of the rule system you use ... Go for it !    :D

Hi!

I think it was one of those smart things GW did long ago was to leave enough room for people to invent their own chapters. Of course that was the GW of old, nowadays the emphasis is more with the "official" chapters and their army books.

I miss the good 'ol days.... :)
