I haven't played against the Tau lately.

That's a shame. Have you played with the Tau at all? I'd love to get your feedback on the list. You're a very vocal poster. It seems a pity you never back any of your posts up with play data. Can you perhaps schedule a game or two? Would you like a bash on vassal?

I don't think I've commented much on the Tau in months?

That would be why I haven't posted on the Tau much in ages, because I only really post on a list if I'm actively testing it.

Can you perhaps schedule a game or two?
I'll see what I can do.

Would you like a bash on vassal?
I don't use it, sorry.

This makes no sense as you then say you haven't playtested it

It makes plenty of sense, the issues being raised by comments here are minor.

Unless large balance issues are raised (and create a pressing need), or the list is required for the ERC army book, I don't see a need to break the schedule.

If points have been raised and can be addressed, and no one wants to keep playtesting the same things that have already been brought up, what would be the benefit of letting the list sit fallow for more than a month?

The schedule isn't set in stone, playtesting has dropped off, and players are feeling the absence of communication as an absence of interest and that worries them; what harm comes from moving up the next release so people can start playing *that* version?  If the Champs are addressing/correcting these issues already, waiting does nothing.

If...no one wants to keep playtesting...

That is a different matter, and it wasn't my impression that everyone had given up.

Last posted reference to a Tau v5.1 playtest was about a month ago... by me.

A month of no activity... that's not a good sign.

Mephiston and I will get our 3rd playtest in soon and Dobbsy and I have a game poised at the beginning of turn 4 (its very close so far) that will finish this weekend (hopefully).

It would be nice to hear from the AC's now and then, perhaps some comments on the playtests that have taken place so far.  At least the playtesters then know that the games are being looked at.

If its any consolation I would have been keenly testing the Tau - if I had been in the right country. I remain free on vassel though.

Though in some ways the FW announcement has had an effect, there is also for me at least a growing desire to see what Epic-Uk would have in mind for such a list, since it is something I would want to take to tournies.

So what have people found as proxies for Hammerheads (etc) and suits?

Tau Command packs contain two battlesuits plus shield drones and at least at the moment are still available, I just bought a few extra of these to make up the number of suits I needed. One carries a close combat blade that could be removed and replace with a weapon made from plasticard bits (how the original suit was made anyway), then apart from minute differences in the antena on their head there is no difference between what a command battlesuit and a normal battlesuit can carry, it's just a more dynamic pose. Ok yes you then need some way of differentiating your actual command ones, but a minor conversion (I'll be attempting to model Forge World style commander bits for my commander out of plasti-card bits) and/or a different paint scheme then works fine. You also get shield drones to go with the suits and which can also go with infantry - some kind of proxy infantry will look more tau like if you mix some drones in. You also end up with excess Ethereals, but I figure people who generally use proxy tau for their armies might like to trade/buy one of the these to lead their army (not got round to updating my trade list in ages but if you want one let me know).

Tau Sky Ray tanks are in Aeronautica Imperialias and will still be available on going. They have the exact same hull, and SMS weapons and a turret that could be converted with vaguely appropriate proxy or plasticard weapons. A simple tau-like proxy for a railgun could be a pulse rifle from W40k and a few of these could be bought from bits webstores on the net for cheap. Something could be found for an Ion Cannon no doubt (the other weapon pattern turrets would be perfect for these and they are still available at the mo), and just the turret plus a burst cannon made from 4 bits of thin plastic rod stuck together could represent a Devilfish.

Take on-goingingly available Drones Mines, cut the 3 weapons off, stick 2 of them back on to the bottom bit in the same sort of fashion they are on a normal Gun Drone, wire or clear plastic rod to the base and they're done (you can even vary the height or angle slightly with these and have more variety than the official drones). Kroot - just proxy using any kind of not that armoured 6mm alien models (the tau empire has subsumed many alien races into their empire and their armies). A stand with 1-2 Remora Stealth Fighters are similarlyish equipped and could make a kind of reasonable proxy for a stand of Stealth Suits (assume they circle around that general area or something) so long as you point out to your opponent what they are.

Personally the FW announcement means I now have a tau army (and a large one at that), which I'd otherwise not have got for years, possibly if ever. I want to get a load of epic games in generally and playtests after I've got back into playing enough to make them worthwhile, but I have uni essay commitments I need to finish first which are unfortunately dragging on a bit longer than I'd hoped.

I'm sorry i problably played tau more than everyone but its like beating a dead horse imsick of playing them. im not a big computer guy so i dont post the battle reports but out of 20 or so games i won like 2 to 3. i managed to beat Necrons once, space marines once and the eldar samhanes once. i know i should post but i relied on some of my freinds i play to fue it. they dont post the game but just the scores some times. i have to say it was way to long a wait to make changes. im sick of them the way they are and have to say they only need minor changes to be more polayable. i wont go into particulars cuz no one wants to discuss it till Aug!!! so they are being played and people love them. but till something happens and we discuss what changes and then playtest those changes im done with them. im making 2 more armies so ill play those till something happens RON IN P.A.

Actually, I'd advise you *do* "go into particulars" as people *DO* want to discuss things; it's the Army Champions that don't seem to want to though, for some reason.
