Well, my friends and I were supposed to play D&D this past weekend, but it fell through at the last moment, so a few of us got together to play some EPIC.

I decided I wanted to try out the new Tau list instead of fighting against it, so I proxied with my Eldar (They're both high tech xenos! ?As well, I'm not going to even put primer on Tau models until the list is done...) and got down to business.

We played 2000 points on a 4x4 table and got three games in over the afternoon and evening. ?Not sure how quickly I'll be able to write these up as I've spent a lot of time gaming the past few days and I think the girlfriend would like some of my time. ?*laugh*

4'x4' Table. ?The various "patches" scattered about the table are forest sections (we use them to represent jungle, brush, or swamp as needed... one day we'll have good scenery!)

Turn 1

Strategy Roll: Space Marines

Detecting the nearby xenos, Element Primus advances on the Pathfinders, training their multi-meltas on them, vapourizing one of the hapless Tau.

Moving almost in tandem, Element Secundus also advances, popping up to fire on the Tetras but they are unable to get a lock on the enemy skimmers.

It is obvious the Gue'la don't understand the significance of the marklights aimed at them as Shas'Sha'Ka sustains fire on Element Primus, the nearby Pathfinders marking them fully. ?Four of the deadly flying machines are knocked from the sky by swarms of missiles. ?The survivor flees back into the ruined city, out of sight.

The commander of Element Rex orders his Marines forward and they do double time and debus near the aliens in the trees, their guns thundering mercilessly against the Pathfinders. ?The two Devilfish are destroyed and a Stealth team and Pathfinder killed. ?The few remaining scouts head back towards their own lines.

Noting the danger of the markerlight bearing enemy, the tanks of Element Terebrus hesitantly advance on Mont're'Naga, blasting apart two of the hovering vehicles which then fall back towards the black rock.

Element Decerto mounts up and marches across the battlefield straight into the guns of the Stingray contingent!

Assessing the volume of firepower the massed enemy tanks represent, the Hammerheads of Cal'Au'Ka pop-up to sustain fire on the now unmarked enemy. ?Many hits are scored, but adamantium armour saves the Marines and only one Predator is knocked out of action.

Uneager to get close to the vicious Marines, the Shas'O never-the-less advances his Crisis suits towards Element Rex. ?Many of their shots hit home as two Marines, a Razorback, and a Vindicator are taken out of the fight.

The viciousness of the battle has surprised both forces and only the Predator detachment succeeds in rallying?

Turn 2

Strategy Roll: Space Marines

Calling loudly on the Emperor, Element Rex engages the Crisis suits, who unsuccessfully try to evade the coming firefight. ?The battle is hard-fought and teeters in the balance, barely tipping in favour of the Marines despite the Tau only losing two Crisis Teams; one Razorback and a squad of Marines is the price paid for victory. (The Marines won the fight by 1? *sigh*)

Element Decerto advances on the nearby Stingrays, firing carefully, taking out two of the missile gunships.

Ignoring the approaching Gue'la tanks, the Hammerheads again pop-up, sustaining fire on the battered Marine command element: killing another unit of Marines and shattering a Razorback. ?The savaged warriors are driven back towards their own lines by the attack.

The Piranhas double forward from their hiding spot to pursue the fleeing Marine commander and fell another Marine unit and the detachment's Hunter.

Trying to establish a line of sight on the evasive Hammerhead, the Predators double around the hill and open fire on the grav-tanks. ?Tau armour saves the day this time and only one of the skimmers is knocked down.

Knowing their vulnerability to the missiles of the Stingrays, Element Secundus doubles towards the missile gunships. ?They score no hits, but the explosive hiss of multi-melta fire breaks the nerve of the Tau crews and they flee towards the centre of the battlefield, their own lines being overrun.

The Emperor does not smile as all units, except the Marine Supreme Commander, rally?

Turn 3

Strategy Roll: Tau

Though somewhat shaken by their presence, the Hammerheads pivot and sustain fire on the tanks of Element Terebrus, disabling two of the Predators.

The Piranhas sustain fire on the still fleeing Marines and are able to fell the enemy commander and his Razorback.

Trying to help their badly mauled brothers, Element Terebrus advances on the Shas'O's cadre, but their lascannons are unable to lock on to the Crisis suits and they only place a blastmarker. ?(My opponent assumed the Crisis suits were LVs and, boy!, was he disappointed to find they weren't!)

Element Secundus tries to find a target to pursue, but the static on the command link disrupts their plans and they only move towards the middle of the battlefield.

With nerve recovered, the Stingrays of Shas'Sha'Ka double into enemy territory, claiming the Marine Blitzkrieg and eliminating the survivor of Element Primus with a barrage of missiles.

Element Decerto doubles to the Tau Blitzkrieg and fires wildly on the distant Hammerheads, scoring no hits.

Seeing victory in his grasp, the Shas'O double his Cadre to one of the enemy objectives before turning to fire on Element Secundus, destroying two of the hovering gun platforms.

The Tetras also double up to claim the other objective, firing on Element Secundus as well, but unable to do any harm.

Lost in the woods with no backup, and feeling somewhat under appreciated, the Pathfinders sit tight, even after the Shas'O orders them up off their tau'utts?

End of Turn: Space Marines 1 (Blitzkrieg) vs Tau 2 (Blitzkrieg, Take and Hold).

I did read through this batrep and thank you for posting it.

I'm reluctant to respond as in depth as I did in other bat reps though...

As I've noted before here and elsewhere, I think the marine list is flawed. I think it suffers from being the first list to production and there's been 'power creep' since. I think it has potential in the right hands, but is very difficult to play successfully and consistently with.

I don't think the typical marine player has a chance against the typical eldar player for example.

Therefore, battlereports against marines are still valid, but to a lessor extent when compared to reports against IG, Orcs, Eldar, and BL - at least IMHO.

I tend to have that kind of overtone to my responses to marine bat reps. So... if anything, from a 'playtest perspective' I take notice that this was basically a close game, and as I expected the Tau did win, though I'm surprised the margin was relatively close.

On the hand, from a good game perspective, it sounds like this one was enjoyable. Nothing like a good bloody battle. :)

A couple comments - no suprise you didn't get to go first in any of the turns.

Very surpised that only predators rallied on turn 1.

You said, "again pop-up, sustaining fire " in the turn 2 write up... I'm now assumign you were not using the experimental - if not defacto skimming rules in many circles. That is, if using the experimental rules, you may not pop-up _and_ sustain fire anymore. The act of popping up now is an act of moving and comes as part of one of the move and fire actions only.

I'm sure you knew that, just wondering why you weren't using the experimental (defacto ?) skimmer rules here...

Turn 2 - Space marine commander not rallying on turn two - LOL :) Oh the treacherous and changing ways of the carcass god... or is that Tzeentch's flam in the far off distance... hmm... :)

Being that the opponent didn't know the impact of ML and didn't expect crisis to be infantry, I'm assuming he's not exactly familiar with the latest list. Was he pretty familiar with previous versions of the Tau? Seems like ML impact should be something he had an appreciation for. Although he had a close game (2:1, Tau V), guess its not the worlds end. :)

Thanks again for the report, contracts on the win as well (beginning to wonder if you were going to be able to pull off a win against anyone there Chroma - was starting to feel sorry for you a bit!)

Cripes, those SM formations are big!  Do you play with tactical formations that size in 3k SM armies?

That's inspiring.

We have three Marine players in our group: Codex Marines, Blood Angels, and White Scars.

The Codex Marine player's philosophy is "I need enough Marines to do the job, and enough Marines to get them there."  He tries to bullk out the Tactical Detachments as much as possible most times, and they are usually frightingly tough to get rid of.  It's certainly a different Marine playstyle then one usually sees.  As well, giving Vindicators a 30cm (like other Marine tanks) move, makes taking them worthwhile.
