Had time for two 3K battles this afternoon - this is the first one with my tyranids against my mates marines.  It's been a while since we had used either of these armies.

We used Nid 7.3 with following mods:
-Trygon 25cm move, no infiltrate.
-Meiotic Spores, 35 points, cannot garrison, count as difficult terrain for aircraft with 30cm radius.

Marines used the standard changes (1.1(?))
1) Cost changes (+/-25 points)
- Vindicator det, 275 (-25)
- Predator det, 275 (-25)
- Land Raider det 375 (-25)
- Terminator det 350 (+25)
- Landing Craft 375 (+25)

2) Speed upgrades (+5cm)
- Vindicator, 25cm
- Attack Bike, 35cm

3) FF upgrades (1 better)
- Land Raiders, FF4+
- Predator Destructor, FF4+

4) Armours get Hunters
- Vindicator det, hunter upgrade allowed
- Predator det, hunter upgrade allowed
- Land Raider det, hunter upgrade allowed

5) "And They Shall Know No Fear"
- Number of BMs in assault resolution is halved (round down)
- Leaders remove 2BMs instead of 1


Tyranid List:

-Dominatrix, 3 Trygons, 6 Termis.
-Warriors, 26 Termis, 6 Hormis.
-Tyrant, 6 Termis, 4 Hormis
-Greater Synapse Node, 4 Dactylis, 2 Termis
-Harridan, 9 Gargoyles
-Hierophant
-Hyrdaphant



Marine List:
-Tactical, SC.
-Tactical
-LandRaiders
-2x Whirlwind
-2x Devastator
-Warhounds
-Terminators

Setup and Turn 1:

The Tyranids deploy left to right - Harridan, Hydra, Tyrant, GSN, Dom, Hiero, Warriors. The marines garrisoned both devastators on their objectives on overwatch. Behind them were the tacticals, then Warhounds and Landraiders, and finally the whirlwinds.



I march forward most units. Harridan fails and just heads towards the settlement. The Warriors swarm loses 18 stands to Whirlwind fire as it marches up the right.

The marines advance Warhounds and Landraiders and do 4DC damage to the Hydraphant which continues its advance. The Hierophant takes some revenge by shooting a Landraider.

End of turn the Hydraphant regenerates 2 DC, and all but one of the tyranid casualties is spawned back - mainly by the Dom, Tyrant, and GSN.

Turn 2

Terminators teleport behind the warrior swarm to grab the objective there, and because the warriors are unshielded by gaunts from a rear attack - oops!

Marines win Initiative - the warhounds double behind the Hydraphant and shoot it but cause no damage as their blastguns are recharging (not a great move on the part of the marine player... as he shall find out). The terminators are ordered to sustain fire at the warriors but the order is not received despite the marines SC intervening. The terminators take a blast marker and fire normally killing one warrior.

The hierophant eats the Landraiders, and scuttles onwards. The Warrior Swarm eats the devastators in front of them and press forward.

The marines open fire killing and wounding more bugs - but no significant damage.

The hydraphant turns round and rips into the warhounds (one is in CC range), with support from the Harridan's swarm. One warhound survives and flees around the ruins to it's left.



With the Dominatrix and gaunts in tow, the trygons swarm up the hill and eat the other devastator formation.

Turn 3

Marines win initiative again - in a bold move their right hand tacticals engage the dominatrix swarm in a firefight. (The trygons had crested the hill but the dom and gaunts were too far back to assist them). All trygons go down for the loss of a rhino! More termis die and all except the Dominatrix fall back to avoid being cut down.

A whirlwind battery kills another 6 gaunt stands from the warrior swarm.

The Harridan swarm then activates and finishes off the remaining warhound.

The remaining tacticals move and fire upon the warrior swarm killing some more gaunts.

The Hierophant engages a whirlwind battery and eliminates it (two round firefight!) but loses 3 DC in the process due to all the support fire it endures.

The terminators are bombarded by the dactylis, losing a stand and racking up 5 blast markers due to disrupt! The terminators then shoot down a gaunt from the warrior swarm. In return the warrior swarm sustains fire breaking the terminators but doing not killing any.

The dominatrix charges up the hill angry at the marine sneak attack on her trygons  :alien:.  A marine stand and two rhinos are lost as the marines break and fall back. The dominatrix takes a point of damage.

End of turn after rallies the marine player has two tacticals and one whirlwind formation near their objectives, and one rallied terminator formation over on their left flank. Most of the tyranid army is still intact and the marine player decides to concede...



Well pretty quick and brutal - major lesson for the marines: Keep your scout titans and landraiders well away from Bio-Titans!

Rules Comments:

Well I really like the trygon rules we used (25cm no infiltrate). Nice. Not much to say apart from that - except perhaps that this was always going to be pretty tough for the marines given their lack of TK and MW. Obviously the marine player should have done quite a few things differently but they are not an army he has used a lot yet.

Right time for battle report 2... along come Ulthwe :)
