Hello! ?I've started this thread to show how my painting work is progressing, with the intention to help me stick to my targets this year!

Over the last year I've gone a bit mad buying stuff, I've got enough Marines to make TWO seperate 1,500point armies, started a WFB Chaos army, and got in to Epic in a big way, buying no less than FIVE armies worth of stuff - when I already had 3,000 points of Epic Guard to paint! ?:O

So I have declared a New Miniatures Amnesty - no new minis until I have painted my following targets for the next year. ?My problem is that I love making the minis, and I buy them and put them together about 10 times faster than I paint them!

My aim is, over the next year, paint ONE of my 1,500 points Space Marine armies, and finish painting the 3,000 point Epic Guard force, by next summer so I can enter the 40k Grand Tournament with the former, and the Specialist Games one with the latter. ?I've called this task The Big Paint ? :;):

I go back to uni monday (starting my final year), and my intention is to spend 1-2 hours every other night painting.

My target for this month is to paint at least ONE marine Tactical Squad and finish ONE detatchment of my Guard army. ?This might not sound much, but bear in mind one detatchment in this army consists of 19 Guardsmen units, 6 Chimeras, 2 Ogryn units and 4 Ratling Sniper units! ?

I'll post pics of what I'm painting, showing how they've started and how they're progressing.

As a start, here's the Tactical Squad I'm doing first. ?Ive had them assembled for a year and not done anything with them - that's how bad I am! ?:D

Good luck Firestorm - and keep posting pics!
Er - assembled for 1 year? Most of my stuff remains assembled for 3-5 years! And a dragon I'm working on has been assembled for around 8 years! ?:( It's been alternatively destined for WHFB Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Chaos Undivided, High Elves, Wood Elves and unmounted (in the old days). The current flavour is Woody... :D

That's a LOT of stuff for one month! My monthly target is usually to undercoat 1-2 models.... :( :p

Good luck for your final Univ year too.
cheers,
John

PS - what sort of Marines? Or is it a surprise?

They're going to be more Fire Storm chapter Space Marines.  As they're my own chapter, I guess that's not much help though! :p

If I have anything sitting around for more than four years, I tend to give up on it as a 'never going to paint it' job, and sell it on! ?:D

I won't paint that entire Guard formation in one month, but I'll try and get some of it done (perhaps just the Infantry stands). ?The rest of the army's not to bad, there's that *BIG* Mechanised Guard formation, and a Tank Company with Demolishers, but other than that it's stuff like Flak Batteries and Artillery batteries.

I forgot to add it, but I would also like to get my Inquisition Drop Fortress painted (pic below).

Well, it's nearly ready, I made an Inquisitorial 'I' symbol from some Green Stuff & Plasticard which is going to replace the Radar.

To show the Fire Storm Chapter's colours, I've posted this pic.  It's from my first Fire Storm army, which I made four years ago!  My painting has improved (slightly) since then  and I'm going to use a slightly different technique - but you'll all have to wait to see that!  :D

Four years ago You painted better than me at present. Interesting "scorched" color scheme. Appropriate for Firestorm I guess.  :p  :;):

Thanks, Mojarn!  I've never thought of it as 'scorched', but I guess that is appropriate, you're right!

I dry brush Red Gore then Blood Red, but it kind of 'tones down' when I varnish it - I think it looks nicer darkened down post-varnishing.

But like I said, I'm going to try a slightly different approach to the paint scheme this time. (glances round furtively) :blues:

Excellent work, Firestorm! I'm with Mojarn: your painting 4 years ago is better than mine now. I'm looking foward to seeing more.

Good luck at uni! :)

Just an update, I've started the Big Paint ™ in earnest now, I've painted a 'test' Marine, to see how the new technique I've been thinking of using looks. Though I'm not sure I like the new or the old style now! ???

I also prepped some Epic Guard units for painting, and started on the Epic Inquisition Drop Fortress.

Tonight - painting Epic Guardsmen, the Drop Fortress - I think I'm going to leave the Marines until I've really decided how I want to paint them! :D

another update - last night I spent about 90 mins painting.  I did a little bit more to the Drop Fortress, and I'm pleased to say I finished four stands of Guardsmen! :)   What's not so good is the fact that they were already 3/4 painted. :O   It did take quite a mental effort to motivate myself to paint them to be honest, I kept looking at them, all 24 stands in the formation (!) thinking 'I should start them... but theres just sooo many of them!'

In the end I found finishing off the four I DID do rewarding, and I'm looking forward to getting the rest done.

Then there's just the Chimeras, Tank Company, War Hounds, Shadow Sword, Hydras, Basilisks, Marauders... :O :;):

I know the feeling!!

If you manage to keep to your New Miniatures Amnesty then you are a stronger man than me. Wish you good luck and good to see that you're already making progress on your W40k stuff.

Cheers

Well, I'm afraid the Big Paint ? hasn't been that big at all over the last couple of evenings, which I've spent with my girlfriend! ?So no painting done I'm afraid!???

Which means at the end of Week One of the Big Paint ?, I have painted:
- One Test Marine
- Four Stands of Epic Guardsmen
- and part of the Epic Inquisition Drop Fortress.

Not as much as I'd hoped, but I feel more inspired going in to the second week, when hopefully I'll be able to get FOUR evenings painting in. :)

By the end of next week I hope to have done the following:
- more Epic Guardsmen
- finished the Drop Fortress (? ???)
- Started on my first Fire Storm Tac Squad (at least... if I can decide on my painting technique - there may be more test marines first!   :D )

Okay, I've actually managed to paint my first (new!) Fire Storm marine! :)  And I'm pleased about how it looks.  I'll post pics of it, and hopefully more newly painted marines next week! :D

Other than that, I've painted a few more stands of Epic Guardsmen.  Quite enjoying doing that actually, when I first got them I looked at them and thought 'arrgh, they're so small they must be a nightmare!' :O At this rate, I should have the INFANTRY bit of that detatchment finished by the end of the month - just the chimeras to do then!
