OK, I actually got down to playing a game last weekend (battle report as soon as I can, so about four months!)
Something came up that I thought that I would ask about. I was playing Orks (makes a change) and I decided to ram a squadron of Brutes into an Imperial Battleship. But what happens? The bases are too big to all touch at the same time. The options were:
Split the squadron into two groups, each ramming a seperate squadron.
Allow all of the ships to ram the same targets, even if they cant physically fit close enough.
Allow only a few of the ships to ram, and the other rams are lost.
In the end, we allowed the entire squadron to ram the same target, even if the bases were too big to allow the models to touch physically.

A kind of related topic to my last battle with Orks. I wanted to move my two kruisers into BTB with an imperial cruiser so that I could board it. Unfortuantly there were two cobras that were where my ships would end up. After talking it over with a few bystanders too, it was decided that they should still be allowed to go ahead with it, and that they were placed where the cobras are once they move away. We decided that although phsically we couldn't fit the ships in, they would be able to still board as its supposed to represent a 3D battle field. Therefore other angles of attack would be available.
I would say this for your dilemma too. There are more than one plane of attack, above/below etc.

Since ramming ships continue their move after ramming, your best bet is to move each ramming ship the full extent of it's movement, keeping track of which ones actually make contact with the intended victim. If, however, the rammers just barely make contact with the victim, you may have the problem you described. In that case, just crowd them around as best you can and work out rams for all of the ships that would have made contact. The 3-D arguement is a valid one.

Quote (RobertBMartin @ 23 2003 Jan.,15:13) | Since ramming ships continue their move after ramming. | Is that right? I cant remember the exact conversation that we had, but I seem to remember thinking that the ramming vessel stops at the point of the ram. Anyone got a page reference for this? Thanks.

The way I've played it is that movement stops upon contact with the enemy, just like boarding.

Unfortunately, I don't have books on me, but I believe its in one of the FAQ/Questions & Answers articles reprinted in the 2002 annual. But I'm certain it is accurate.
