Well I'll be damned . Last sunday getting back from autumn holiday I decided to pack my gothic ships as well since I there was room for those in car(usually I travel through train). Just on principle "maybe I'll find somebody to play it with".
Next day I enter gaming room and whad do I see. Poster regarding BFG tournament and 2 practise games before it! Now if this isn't nice suprise I don't know what is...
Anyway question is. What to take in. Imperium fleet is sooooo small it's out. Emperor class battleship, 2 lunar, dictator, gothic and few cobra's don't make 1500 pts. That leaves chaos fleet which has some 16+ cruisers/heavy cruisers(though some are converted unofficial ones like Hecate), 6 idolators and despoiler.
As mentioned point size will be 1500(bummer. I like bigger battles). This leaves question of what to take, what to not. For cruisers I'm pretty much set. Carnages and slaughters are my favourite types so those feature heavily. 2 of both would be minimum. Hades mixed in likely as well(pety Hecate is unofficial ). Biggest Q is though. Despoiler or not?
It's one damn big model, one damn beatifull model and would make one damn nice flagship to be certain! Plus idea of launching S7 lance battery against anyone wandering to it's front makes me laugh. OTOH it's pretty expensive ship as well, especially for 1500 pts...
If no despoiler then replacement would be styx(got to have some launch bays for defence) and some other cruiser.
Escorts I'll probably leave out. Not fan of them and idolators are damn expensive for 1500 pts.

Hi. I would probably go for the Despoiler. I have never been a huge fan of the Styx and usually take two Devastations instead. A little more expensive, but much more useful.
I would seriously consider Escorts. At that points value, it is likely that other players (especially Eldar!) will have a few Escorts, and your big ships are going to get outmoved quite quickly. I would doubly take Escorts in a smaller force which includes Slaughters. Sure, two may be able to cover each other, but some Idolators (while admitidly expensive) would allow you to react if they found themselves in trouble.
Anyway, let us know how thegames go for you, and good luck.
