I've been pondering about building an actual army for a change. I mean in the last few years I've hardly touched any GW stuff and the modelling I did were only a few random projects which remain WIP, my "true scale" Mega Gargant for Epic or Dark Eldar squad for 40k are examples of this. However...this time things will be different! I've been looking through the hundreds of pictures of artwork and modelling that have been contributed for the ASP and I noticed CELS' Ork fleet (that guy keeps on making cool stuff tempting me to get back into this hobby for real!). Using electronic bits he managed to make the Ork ships look cooler:

While these ships are very cool looking I've decided to take it even a step further. I'm planning to totally scratch built these ships and not use a single bit of GW (or any other modelling line) products. The ships will be made from various electronic bits (my brother donated his dead stereo for this cause already!), wheels from lighters and every other bit and bite I can get my hands on.

Dimensions I managed to get my hands on:
Cruisers: 6,5 x 3 x 1,5 (in centimetres and excluding wings)
Escorts: 3,5 x 1 x 1 (in centimetres and excluding wings)

Shame is that I don't really have an opponent though...

Oh yeah, one last questions...something for one the side though. How big are the following things:
-Torpedoes (the torpedo itself, but also the size of the marker? By the way how many torpedo markers are normally used during a single game?)
-Brute Ram Ships
-Fighta Bomba squadrons (including base)
-Assault boat squadrons (including base)

Pictures coming soon!

Sorry for the double post, but since this is sort of a project log I found it to be fitting. :)

Here are some WIP pictures of the ships:

First Terror ship:

Second Terror ship:

Kill Kroozer:

The four ships so far:
Three Terror Ships and one Kill Kroozer

I tried to move away from the usual design of the Ork ships in which they all have big faces with giant teeth. I might add some teeth patter plates to the sides of the front of the hull, but no actual beaks with eyes and all that. Do note that they are WIP and need to be painted, also...Im not the most skilled photographer out there! :(

That looks good and orky, not like the production line style ships GW makes.

Don't forget though that orks benefit from very heavy front armour and I can't really see anything obvious from the pictures.

WiP though hey.

Update:

NEW KILL KROOZER!!!
Picture 1

I've decided to make this one a little bit more "conventional" in it's Orkiness:
Full frontal madness

As mentioned earlier, I've started working on my escorts, here are the first three of my Ravager Gunships:

I wasn't too fond of my third Terror Ship so I've changed it a bit by removing that big blue blob on the front and simply shoving guns in there!  ;D

I'm currently working on finishing these ships, a fourth Terror Ship and four Onslaughts.

Those escorts look very nice.

Overall it would be easier to, i dont know...see the  ships if they where undercoated because currently all the colours from the PCB boards and other things throw me out a bit.

But the price is right and I respect that ideal.  :)

I'm a little shocked by the ammount of Ravagers in your fleet (I personally see them as a bonus ship to a squadron rather than a squadron in themselves as you can't combine Ork torps) but now that i've seen the rough and ready look of the escort they could be any class you want! ...that kinda sounds like I'm flinging at your scratchbuilds, please don't missunderstand I think they look great!!!

Cheers,

RayB

Good stuff. I got a chuckle of seeing the bit of material in the background that read "bandage".

The idea is that there will be two 5 ship squadrons of escorts, each squadron containing 3 Ravagers and 2 Onslaughts (already working on those, and they look very sleek in an Orky way).

BFG never really was that WYSIWYG like 40k is, meaning that I have a little bit of freedom when working on those ships, another great factor is that BFG scales are primarily focussed on base-size which is great since my ships are a bit bigger than the standard models...but that doesn't matter that much since the normal models are way out of scale as well! :p

@davidH: I will try to get a bunch basecoated as soon as possible, just need to get my hands on some cheap spraypaint stuff, I did find a lot of spraypaint at this car-repair shop, only problem was that it was shiny black paint which isn't really what I need.

Yet another update:

WIP Onslaught Escort. I wanted them to look quite different from the Ravager gunships partly because it's a bit hard to recognise the weapons on my Ork ships, but also the fact that I like some variation in modelling Ork ships!

Another view

Oh yeah...it's also a tribute to that amazing 90s videogame Wipeout!!! :p

More pictures of the Ravagers:

This is a totally different design for one of the Ravagers, perhaps this ship would be the leader of the squadron or something along those lines.

Kill Kroozer 2:

Isn't she pretty?
The chunky beast still needs to be finished

Wonderful stuff, the first onslaught reminds me of Star Wars  :D
Love the ingenuity

You mean the X-Wing fighter right?

BTW I still need to come up with models for Fightabommerz and Assault Boats. The Assault Boats will probably be very small screws (3mm x 6mm) with an engine strapped to it. The fightercraft will be different from the usual Spitfire like design as seen in the official models. I always found that space fighters would look different than that, they will probably be having the Flying Wing design, very much based on the German Horton Ho 229 IX! I just don't know yet how to get stuff in that shape with the dimensions 5mm x 3mm without just cutting pieces of cardboard in triangular shapes of that size...

Latest update:

First of all two new Onslaughts:

This one needs more bits:

Also got a new "Nob" Ravager (I've got two squadrons of 4 Ravagers, each is "lead" by a "Nob ship" which is basically a Ravager that looks a bit different):

My two Ravager squadrons are "complete" as in that they both got 4 ships at the moment, my latest Ravager:

Now...be very afraid. I've started working on the Hulk. I never liked the whole asteroid thing the Space Hulks got so I decided to build a biiiiiiig battleship like thing. It will be a long monster covered with turrets and launch bays, very much influenced by the battleship from Deff Skwadron.

The back next to a Terror Ship:

The bugger still needs a whooooooooole lot of work and will be a long term project because I don't have enough bits and bites lying around here to finish it. Need to find myself some more old radios and such in order to finish this monster!

Looks super! If I would do BFG fleet I would definedly borrow some of your ideas (did somebody say that imitation is the biggest compliment?).

I really want to see some of these painted!
