Can Defilers and Hellfire Cannons be assigned a faction for purposes of hatred?  3+ initiative is nice, but 2+ is obviously better.

It's "better" for Initiative purposes to be "Undivided" as there's no "hatred" to worry about so you always get that +1 to Initiative, so you're always 2+ for them.

You get that +1 to init if there are *no* hated units/formations nearby.

Indeed.  Undivided Formations hate no one, so they will never have any hated units nearby.  I never looked at it that way.  IMHO the wording for hatred dances around the meaning, and you have to interpret it yourself (leading to several interpretations) .

It goes on about Undivided being an 'exception', and doesn't mention anything about Undivided in the actual rules text.
