Good evening, everyone!

I have been watching this site for a while, and I was absolutely fascinated by some of the solutions I found in this topic. I am an Epic fan, and the two armies I really wanted to collect were Tyranid and Necron. There were possible solutions for Necron proxies, but no Tyranid. I was very sad :( .

I was thinking about it, and had a look at the EPICOLLECTOR website to see what kind of figures GW used to produce for the little bugs. The more I watched them, the more I found that these 'nids - more than any other species in the game - consist of simple geomertrical shapes which could be relatively easily sculpted in themselves. The legs, for example, consist of three parts: the "hoof", a trunk-like "shin" and a fatter thigh, on which there are only two-three parallel cuts representing the chitin. Also, the figures were kind of ?flat. I realized that the two sides of the gaunts are almost identical, and it would not be difficult to sculpt a "two-dimensional" side of a 'nid on a flat surface. if that surface just happens to be transparent, it would be easy to turn it over, and sculpt the other half of the beast, as we can see the previously sculpted half. I have been experimenting, and I wish to show the result. the middle figure is an Epic IG comissar, to show the scale. The gaunt is not finished, but the warrior is, and I think they demonstrate the basic idea.

Tyranids are always a great sorrow for the epic community, so if the picture does not upload, I will probably be hunted down as a heretic. So here it goes!

Wow. They look really good :) But the Termagant seems to be a bit to big.
The Tyranid Warror looks very good and at the right scale too, but a bit flat :) But so are the old sculps too :D

That's true, the Termagant is too big, but that's something you can change just by doing another sculpt. By the way, you will be proclaimed Saint by the Pope if you ever get to produce tyranid infantry proxies, justbecause you would have made a miracle!. You have been warned. Now, sculpt on your own risk :D

Nice technique.  Looking at the old nid infantry I think they probably used a very similar method for creating the original Guants and Genestealers!

Hey that's clever! Yeah the termi looks a bit big next to the commissar, but very nice work nonetheless :)

And welcome to the forum Meaneye!

Wow. Thank you very much for the kind words. ? ?I am flattered, but at the same time, also sad. Believe it or not, I was convinced that the Termagaunt was actually the right size. I have never seen the "live" model, only the pictures on the Net. I have IG Epic figures, but I had to guess the right scale. I am going to resize the figure, and this time, I will make a photo of every step, but I will need your help first. I need a picture of an IG soldier and a gaunt standing next to each other, showing their sides to the camera. In lack of Epic figures, I can also use a picture of a 28mm IG soldier and a 28mm gaunt next to each other.

Even if the termagaunt is not the right scale, I can show you the result of my work so far. The basic idea was to make just one appropriate figure with the method I have mentioned earlier. Then I wanted to make a "mould" from green stuff. I saw the way to do this on a Hungarian 40K website, and they referred to the Warseer forum (or Warseers?). The idea is to push the figure into the putty while it is still soft. Putty is sticky, so we have to spread oil on the surface of the sculpt (I used sunflower seed oil), then the mould and the sculpt will not stick to each other, and once the mould dries, we can just pop out the figure. I can create the other half of the figure the same way. Then, mass production may follow, and all is left is to stick the two halves of the figure together :D

I am not sure if this "moulding" method is common knowledge or not, so sorry if I was just stating something obvious. Finally, I would like to show a picture of the earlier incarnations of the "gaunt" as well as a "mould" of the tyranid warrior.

Very nice! :)

Actually, an epic Termagant would be roughly half the sice of your Termagant, measuring from muzzle of the weapon to tip of the tail.

Yup, your termagant is about twice as big as it should be.

BlackLegion: so is the problem with its height or its length?

Both, but the height moreso. A gaunt should be significantly shorter than a human, roughly chest height.

Then I'm afraid I will really need a picture for comparison before I start sculpting again. I will have to see the side of a gaunt compared with the side of an IG soldier, and also the front of a gaunt facing the camera with a soldier next to it (my pictures cannot show it, but the figure is a bit flat, and I don't know how flat it should be). Even 40K models would do.

You said you had the idea form the pictures at epicolletcor.
Soi recommend to look there for size comparisons. The round disc all infantry models stand on (to be glued in the holes found in the bases) are all the same size.

D'oh! I should have thought of this. Thanks BlackLegion, I'll start sculpting the new gaunt (just not tonight, it is too late). In the meantime, I will try to make at least one stand of the warriors. It might take a few days because I only made one "mould" of the two halves of the figure, and I'm not sure I could make a new one because the original sculpt came out in pieces (this is the problem with putting a figure together one blob of putty a time - it will not fuse together). See you in a few days!

You might want to try giving your figure a light brushing of thin superglue; it should get between the pieces and stick them together... just don't use a brush you plan on ever using again and make sure there's no moisture on the putty!

Also if you had a sharp razor blade you could just try cutting away the plastic to get the model out.
