Considering that I am a pretty average painter (never even tried my hand at drybrushing ) I have been trying to come up with simple paint schemes for my chaos and imp fleets.
For chaos I thought of: Chaos black with (those strange raised web looking things) painted shining gold, weapons boltgun metal and lights yellow.
or : a deep blue with webby things (!) in shining gold or red gore.
For the imperials something a;ong the lines of the gothic fleet livery, but with prows boltgun metal instead of skull white (I dislike painting light colours over dark).
What does everyone think? If you have other ideas, i would be glad to hear them.

Sounds pretty good to me. Don't worry too much about drybrushing if you haven't done it before. It's much easier than you might think -Especially on the BFG models which are ideal with their rich texture. Just undercoat your models black, pick a colour (not too light) wipe off most of the paint on a piece of cloth and brush away then use a slightly lighter colour for the top highlights.. I find that you get the best drybrushing results with a large brush with thin stiff bristles. Mine are about half an inch wide/ 1-1.5 cm. BFG models are easier to achieve good results with because they are mostly a single colour. For the prows on Imperial cruisers I'd use a normal painitng technique.
...oh, and remember to post some pics once you have some finished
Cheers!

Drybrushing BFG minis is an absolute pleasure.. it makes finishing them so quick! (one of the reasons I love the game I guess!)
I'll try and get some pics of my fleet for you Fleetmaster (if I havn't in a few days, bump this thread to remind me)...

Thanks for the advice about using a stiff brush on the models!
Now I can paint my stuff to look interesting!
What colour scheme does everyone like most for the chaos ships?

Hi Fleetmaster, and (a late) welcome - I'm not usually seen around BFG threads, although I hope to correct this after the Epic painting competition. Don't forget, you have to live with these ships, so go for what you like! As an example, I painted a couple of my Chaos cruisers in Imperial colours, representing them before their transformation - or rather, at the start of the change: one of them has its bows turning dark and red, whilst another has a half and half scheme. My only other suggestion would be to do something different from the classic red, unless you really like it; always nice to see different stuff. cheers!

I want to avoid the red!
My only problem with all my liveries is that they look like those of particular chaos legions, Black legion, 1k sons and night lords respectively.
Time to get thinking

I may be getting hold of some chaos escorts soon, so I'm going to try my hand at drybrushing.
One question; what are the darkest shades of blue and red in the GW paint range?

I wouldn't know much about the blue (hideous blue or something?) but for red any shade drybrushed over black undercoat comes out quite dark, with the advantage that you can regulate the dark/brightness: the more you load the drybrush with paint, the brighter it would be - but the less effective the drybrushing! So for dark drybrush red, load the brush lightly; for brighter areas, load it slightly more and if necessary apply more than one drybrush layer. For really bright areas, drybrush with yellow, bleached bone, or white followed by red.

Thanks to obtaining my first battlefleet ships a few days ago, I've decided on my liveries.
CHAOS: A confession.. I've gone with GWs standard red (red gore, to be precise) and gold, with weapons in boltgun metal! It looks snazzy though, and I couldn't think of anything else, as my other chaos schemes involved blue, and my... IMPERIALS are blue! This is the scheme I'm most proud of, a basecoat of regal blue, with details (such as weapon battery surrounds etc) in enchanted blue, and weapons in boltgun metal. This is a version of the Anargo sector livery (have you heard of the Anargo sector Project?).
Pics might be coming soon!
