Cybershadow,

Just to be clear, I do not believe this is a case of a "right" answer and others are wrong. No matter what you do there will be a trade off of some sort.  So the question for me becomes one of your needs first and the fans second.

The truth is, if the site or sites are good, the people will come. I would first deside how much you are willing to do in light of your other life commitments. Then I would change what you can in the time alloted.

As for the Forums etc, there is no reason they can not stay as is ad each site (Gothic, Epic, WH40k, or Cooking) could not have links back to the shared services such as overall index, links listings, and forums.

In any case, thanks for opening this up to input, it is nice to banter this with you.  :D

one of the other things to consider is the time spent changing things

think how much extra content you could bring to the site

dafraca: I agree completely. Not only is it not a question of right or wrong, but I have my own biases. The trick is to give into them enough to make the whole project fun, while still realising when to be more sensible before thewhole thing becomes crippled.  :D  Which is why I am very keen to get the opinions of the people here. Additionally, the site is more of a community effort than something solely for me, and that is the way that I like it, so it is right that everyone gets a say.

I also agree that if the site is good then people will come. But, more to the point, if the site is good then people will come back.

Jimbo: True, the time spent changing things could be spent on updates (or, more likely, chatting here!), but think about the extra work caused by making a change after those updates!  :D

My thoughts so far are:

A single site - I have heard lots of good arguments for and against this. I currently feel that a single site which is split may be the way forward, addressed by mysite.net/epic etc. However, this is probably the most controversial issue, and so I would like to hear further opinions and conversation on this.

Change of domain - While I realise that this would be almost like starting a new site, I have not been 100% with the address since the fourth edition of Epic. Any suggestions for a new domain?  ???

Transfer - I think that doing this slowly would be best. Set up a front page and then moving these boards as one of the first changes. then, it should be just a matter of taking down and reconstructing a page at a time (a big effort, but not as bad as it sounds at first).

Whatever happens, I do think that I would like to make changes to the navigation of the site, as this is another issue which has caused comments. Any thoughts on how you would like the site organised or set out?

Thanks all. Being able to pool resources and opinions will make this a better community site for sure, and that will mean more future success.

Could you not get a new domain - keeping the old one and point both at the same server? Then old links will still work and you can have a gothic URL to pass to that community and an epic one to use with this community.

Possibly, but I dont think that this is soley about domain. I think that the site needs a new face, the navigation could be improved and possibly the colours altered (although I am less keen to do this).

Any comments on these issues would be welcomed.

Keep Epic here and move BFG onto a dedicated site linked to here.

I wouldn't mind that, but keep the forum together- I would rather we keep the mix of two, as I enjoy both games and it is great not having two to check each day...

I just dont know...  :p  On one hand I agree that seperating out the sites would be good, particularly if I can keep the www.epic40k.co.uk domain which is now well established.

On the other hand, this could be a new start and the new site could be even better, and it is a great opportunity, particularly as I am not happy with the domain any more. There are lots of things that could be changed to make a site using what I have learned from the existing site.

As for the forums, I am determined that no matter what else changes, these boards will remain practically unchanged. I will not split the boards into two, as keeping the member list here is the best way to keep the boards lively for both games. When I talk about reorganising, I mean that the different parts of the board may be re-ordered. For example, right now we have five 'areas' - web sites, background, wargames, painting and converting, and general. I may change this to have something like - web sites, epic, battlefleet gothic, other games, and general. All the boards would stay, but for example the battlefleet gothic area would contain boards dealing with battlefleet gothic background, bfg rules, and the dry dock (painting and converting).

Is this any clearer?

Incidently, I have been thinking about this a lot... if I decide to move the site to a new domain/url, does anyone have any suggestions. Ideally, I want an address that applies equally to the Epic and Gothic games, while not being tied to a particular edition (such as Armageddon), and still encompasses other games if the wind takes me in that direction in the future. Oh, and it needs to be cool, too!

I wanted to get something like www.warhound.net - but it is already taken! And ideas?

Is there any term for the world(s) setting, I know that it is generally refered to as the 40K universe but there must be something else along those lines, maybe we could come up with something, there's a lot of fluff guys here? anything?

Watch out for the "www. gothic" type titles as you may find the oposite happening. The site begins to be seen as a Gothic site that happens to have some Epic stuff.

I still think the overall site idea is not as good as an dedicated Epic name and a Gothic dedicated name. Even if both drove the people to you "main" site page, the URL would bring people interested in the game of their choice.

Something like:

www.epicbattles.net
www.gothicbattles.net

and then if you wanted to add other games into your overall efforts you would go get:

www.40kbattles.net
www.wet_tshirtbattles.net
etc.

I'm all for the last title. I think the forum would attract more members that way! :D
Unfortunately I think GW have purchased Epicbattles... don't know if it is .net or.com or both. It's a good idea though. how about 41stmilennium.net?

Cheers!:)

www.gothic.net!!! Then we might get rock chicks in the forums!! Tight leather and tattoos... now this conv is really distracting me from my work :(

Otherwise www.wet_tshirtbattles.net :p.

On a more serious note, a jack of all trades url can work - look at Portent... I know most of the guys over there are somewhat hostile but it still gets loads of traffic.
