Interestingly enough, the EA Space Marine vehicles were the first CAD models they did. The Land Raider was first IIRC.

You mean the plastic ones? The metal and resin models are pretty much guaranteed to be from non-CAD due to the price-imposed limits on 3D printing at the time.

The Leman Russ and Chimeras in 4th edition were recasts of certain 3rd edition chassis/track combos and they were traditional sculpts. I can't vouch for the Land Raiders et.al. but that's not what vehicle we're discussing here.

Considering the fact the front of the rhino isn't in line it's hard to see how that was CAD either. OTOH GW mould making was the absolute worse with their disregard for 6mm quality so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyhow not really the topic here so we're kinda going way OT

In answer to the OP,
There are a lot of people (obviously not on this forum) who seem to think a game only exists and can be played as long as its manufacturer supports it. Some because they only want to buy official models or they want the kind of constant new and shiny releases. The AT game also triggered the whole "soon I might finally dust off and play my old epic army" thing.

I suppose if GW did make a full AT/epic game, and it was good, and lots of people started playing it, and it didn't disappear after a very short space of time, then it could potentially replace epic in the sense that the already fairly small number of epic players would dwindle in contrast to a surge in people playing AT/epic. However that seems unlikely.

This was from a conversation with Jervis at a Toronto GT where I was running the Epic demo tables.

The LR and Rhino were done in CAD but that was an experiment and mostly used to help the sculptors. He talked about how they used it to test resizing things like turret cupolas.

Cheers for the response pixel, v interesting.

And to keep on topic: No. … Epic 6mm was already obsolete as far as the rest of the wargaming world was concerned, we're just stubborn.

You sure about this? I'm sceptical. The EA Rhinos had noticeably wonky angles and were scaled wrongly to 40k (too wide maybe? I sold mine many years ago so I forget exactly).

The ones who said 6mm Epic is obsolete are not "officialists" (official models only buyers), nor the ones who only play supported games. In fact they are EA players and mini producers...

So you are saying Epic 6mm product lines are obsolete, just not because of AT being 8mm (or 7.5mm or whatever)? ::)

Sorry if I misread you.

GW stopped supporting Epic about a decade or more ago. We don't seem to need them to play Epic. Around these parts … ;D

Yes – though I don't mean this in a bad/insulting way. Epic is out of production (except by a couple of small cottage industries and garage kit makers, who do a great job, but many outsiders found obscure). Epic is out of date (not in line with current fluff or mini production methods). Epic is no longer in use by many people.
All of these are, to me positives! but also obsolete.

I guess to make the question meaningful you have to define "obsolete"
e.g. it might mean relative to now some or all of
- most existing manufacturers of epic compatible models will stop production
- no. of EA tournaments will significantly drop
- no. of battle reports here will significantly drop
- no. of EA forum posts will significantly drop

If those events you listed would occur, than yes to the original question.

However, I think most of us here can agree, none of those will happen. As this site, on FB, etc. 6mm Epic is alive and well and has been for well over a decade.

I think AT8 will only add to the inventory of who want to put the 8mm Titans to their Epic forces. As well there may be some old Epic players and some new AT8 players that will play AT8 like the original AT game. Titan vs. Titan.

And again, I believe based on my passed interaction with GW since '89. That AT8 as a stand alone will be bought and played for only a few years. And will no longer be supported by GW. More that again a few years.

That being said. Again I believe some Epic players will only add the AT8 titans to their forces. And just like with Epic in all it's iterations, and fan made modifications, etc. will continue to be play by the likes of those here. Regardless of GW's support, etc.

Once Again Who needs GW … ? ;D
