Tyranid 2018 Playtest Proposals

The following changes just got pushed to the TP:

  • Drop extra Hormagaunts and Termagants from +20 to +15 in the Tyranid Swarm
  • Increase the core units of the Lictor swarm to 4 Lictors, extras drop from +50 to +35.
  • Brood Lord loses Rending Claws and Talons and drops from +50 to +25.
  • Allow Bio-Titans to be armed with any two weapons (Bile Launcher, Bio-Cannon, Cluster Spines, Pyro Acid Spray, Razorclaw). Max of 1 each though, except for Razorclaws.
  • Large Tyranid Swarm drops from 550 to 525
  • Large Biovore Swarm drops from 400 to 375
  • Large Dactylis Swarm drops from 850 to 825
  • Large Exocrine Swarm drops from 475 to 450

They're a combination of the 2016 proposals, the NDC suggestions and a few more that I threw in (the last four).

If anyone's willing, I'd like to test these:

  • Decrease Tyranid Swarm Trygon upgrades from +60 to +50
  • Increase Genestealer Swarm from 6 for 150, to 8 for 175.
  • Decrease Genestealer Swarm Genestealer upgrades from +25 to +20
  • Increase Trygon Swarm from 3 for 225, to 4 for 250.
  • Decrease Tyrgon Swarm Trygon upgrades from +65 to +60
  • Gargoyles gain IC on their FF
  • Malefactors change transport to "May transport two infantry units without Jump Packs or Mounted, or one light vehicle."

I like the direction the list is going; I hope I can dust off my old bugs and get a game in some time.

I'm not thrilled about changes that require adding to already modeled units; Genestealers are hard to source, especially if I want them to match existing old GW minis. For the sake of old armies, how about changing the base formation to 6 for 135 or 140 instead? At 135 you can get to 8 for 175 with the changed upgrade cost, though 140 is probably a more reasonable price for the activation.

Hey dave,


Keen to play test some stuff, already done a few that are posted up from the NDC. I also got in a few games with the nids this year and took them too a small tournament winning 4 out 5 games.

Few thoughts straight up is

Brood lord looks good at 25 points losing the extra attack. I still took 2 formations of steelers with brood lords though if thats anything.

I didnt mind the trygon upgrade at 50 points to formations but as someone pointed out its the same cost as a carnifex. I think a good way to help them out a little would be 3+ CC. This would combine all the proposals. Instead of formation sizes or starting sizes or upgrade prices. I had 3 Trygons bounce off a shadow sword.

I didnt take the titans. They would have been handing for the extra shooting but most of the time when i ran one i was marching up the field to get some good potential assaults for turn 2 overwhelm. I do think the optional weapons would help.

Is there any chance we could try out the 25% restriction lifted to 33% like other lists to see how that goes. Honestly feel other armies have way better war engine options with 33%.

I think all the implemented changes are good ones. Im not so sure on the proposal for increased cenestealer formation basic price, since that also requires an increased formation size. I’d rather see a lowered price for the formation.

Try the stealers at 125 for 6 then, I was just trying to keep the activation counts unchanged while still buffing the formation.

They're two DC, so 2@4 and a MW@4 is slightly better than the Carnifex at the moment (which is how they played in SM/TL and 2e 40k). The formation increase and point reduction have been received well enough here, but I don't think a stat increase in addition to those would be.

I had dropped it to 25% because the Dominatrix is, nominally, 325-375 points. My thinking being that 750 (25%) plus 325 is a little bit better than 33%. That does leave you in the lurch if you don't take a Dom though. Not sure how to get around that.

Still looking at testing these same changes? Any priority or proposals that can dropped/advanced/have enough of?

Thr orange ones, yes. The stealer and trygon reductions are the most in need of testing.
