So my frustration peaks when I complete a model, let it sit for 24 hrs and Testors Dullcoat drys with a Semi Gloss Finish... Which has happened a countless number of times.

I have a three fold question.

1. How do I get my models flat? I have a whole series that look grate and need the others to match. (its an OCD Thing)

2. Am I the only idiot that doesn't know how to use Dullcoat? When it works it works great but i averaging about 4/10 success rate. Yes I account for humidity, temp, and etc.

3. I have bought the paint on Dullcoat. Any experience here? I've use the vallejo matte but can't kill the shine. Also started getting clumping.

PS using GW and Vallejo paints. GW washes.

Can I ask - are you doing the Vallejo Matte by hand? because I've been using that and don't think that I get a bad shine on the models.

Weird, Dullcote has been a rock for me since I stopped using GW's stuff after a "clouding".

If you're accounting for humidity and temp, what about thoroughly shaking it and doing multiple light coats? Distance matters too. Too far away and it'll dry before it hits. To close and it goes on too heavy.

After I hit something with the glosscoat it using takes 3-4 thin coats of dullcote to get a finish I like. I usually hold it 12" away with quick bursts, starting to the left, passing over the model and stopping to the right. When I do the next coat I go right to left.

same here. I've been using it since i was 8 and won't touch anything else. I never thought about it prior but I too keep it about say... 25cm or so away.

Any matte medium would probably do. I currently mix clear tamiya and their matte. If feeling lucky, I spray the mix through the airbrush, but since this can go wrong (clouding) I tend to do more brush application nowadays.

i have this happen all the time. Dullcote is the least noticeable though. I haven't found any really good solutions either to an entirely flat finish. It's bad enough that many times I take the pics of the models before I varnish just to make sure I have a pic of how I intended the model to look.

The best I've gotten is with a brush on matte varnish or matte medium, but I'd highly recommend an airbrush for application. I find that when you thin it out to apply by brush it often adheres to the surface irregularly and unthined is a too heavy of a coat.

do you find that it can sometimes lift the paint off? i use it on a 2nd pass myself. Granted I use a strong gloss coat airbrushed (it's an actual airbrush varnish so no worries about too thick too thin-it's pure goldilocks) on as I do oil washes now so not a concern anymore.

I'm thinking mixing is the problem. Might just have to shak the snot out of the can. @Nitpick any tips for pant on application? I'm thinking of converting to avoid the X factor of spray on.

What do you do to course correct? Have you been successful in getting it to Matte?

How many shots do across the model?

Putting it on over the blown Dullcoat with limited success.

Also, should I do a gloss coat followed by a dullcoat?

I do gloss coats as I use oils on my models. White Spirit thinners will eat the acrylic paint so they have to be sealed up. The choice of gloss is simply for my preference on capillary action. I don't think you need to switch up and do that for your models (unless you want to come over to the dark side )

Umm I have them set up on a lazy susan deal. I hit them from front, then front right, right side, etc. So it's less a number of coats in one go. I'll often going around a few times with some quick shots. It may be of some note that I let them dry in between sprays (I've got the time for that so YMMV)

When shaking I usually hold the top and spin it in a circular motion, trying to get the agitator to hit the corner where the side meets the bottom. I figure that's where everything collects.

Re paintbrush, for my standards, somewhat thinned Tamiya guck is quite enough. I find that there's a trade off between enough effect and slight chalkiness. I have actually not measured and/or kept records...
