While most battles and armies form around the tactics of maneuver combat, the role of static defenses are still present in the modern battlefield. Quickly fabricated from locally sourced materials they are often found as part of defenses for transport and factory installations or when combat slows to a grinding siege such as Hive warfare. Thousands of such bunkers were erected by the 4th Cadian assault army as it clinched the noose around the capital hive complexes providing a secure and ultimately inexpensive and disposable network of strong points for the attackers.

Painters notes: These are some of the 6mm bunkers from Wasteland Studios. I was exceptionally pleased to see how crisp and sharp the details were and quite reasonably priced. I had been wanting to support the company for a while now since I wasn't able to during the original kickstarter. They're very fun and fast to paint up for use in any number of scenarios and armies. I'd recommend them to anyone interested in spicing up terrain.

I had originally wanted to place a rather large set of numeral decals on the top of the entrances (why? rule of cool). Something along the lines of something one would find in a naval ship model perhaps. I didn't have anything handy and nothing worth the cost on ebay so I went without (not like I can't go back later and add them). While I didn't want to spend too much time on them, I did want something a little more than just plain grey so I opted for a silly but visually interesting faux camo on the entrances. GW Camo Green base and then camo blobs of Catachan Green added. The banding color is Beastial brown using an old 6mm painters trick which is really required at this scale otherwise camo usually doesn't pop. After I went through this I had realized I had forgotten rule #1 for camo: Paint the banding color first like an outline, then go back with the interior color and fill it in. It will easily save you 50% or more in time. Instead of blending anything I simply leveraged the ultra crisp casting by line edging everything (GW fortress grey/ VGC rotting flesh) and then going back on the corner tips with an extreme edges to really make them pop (GW astronomicon grey/AP bone white). After that is was a case of attacking it with washes and grungy stuff and then a few types of weathering powder to give it a used look.

Shame on you for not including a for-scale base of guardsmen!

These two bunkers and your quick scheme on them really reminds me how excellent they are. I like it a lot! The WS buildings have been something I've longed for since the kickstarter, but circumstances have always seemed to conspire against me (as they do again now) to see hobby funds dimished when reminded of how amazing they look.

Tell me just after Christmas how cool these are and maybe I'll finally be able to get some! ;)

I feel you, I should have done an order of them before the £ crashed. v.v

Great stuff, JZ, I always like seeing the Wasteland stuff painted up.

Nice bunkers there Jimmy.
I'm frugally converting some of my own at the moment for some fortification rules I made up, but I'm seriously tempted to just throw mine in the bin and get some of these.
Sweet stuff.

Of primary importance in the reconquest, was the capture and repair of the large numbers of landing pads, runways, and docking infrastructure found in the capital Hive complex. As the war ground on, the limitations of the hastily erected infrastructure located at the sites of the original combat drops were beginning to show in the increasingly complex logistics and lengthening supply lines. By securing this infrastructure, larger, more numerous, and most importantly, more direct lines of support could be opened. Common across Imperial Space, aerospace control stations, such as the Cypra Mundi pattern ATC above, are frequently built to manage and direct the dizzying levels of atmospheric and orbital traffic around any civilized planet.

Painters note:

Another bit of random scenery laying around for far far too long. This is the ATC tower from Xmarx; Nothing too spectacular, just an inexpensive and good enough bit of resin terrain to spice up a table. They didn't really spend any time cleaning up their print artifacts before making moulds but OTOH, an $8 model is fine "enough" and not really worth being a time sink on either. Normally found in 5 parts, at some point over the years I've lost track of the beveled top of the power control so I stuck some random parts off the GW Vehicle Upgrade sprue I had laying around.

The primary worth of Patsayev IV was the infrastructure and expertise in volatile, rare, and complex chemical manufacturing and production of fuels from it's large natural reserves. Of importance was the safe recapture of the vast fields of chemical tanks surrounding the spaceports. After the cult uprisings that drove the worlds of the Calliandra cluster from Imperial control, the fields were abandoned and left to deteriorate despite their obvious material wealth.

Of tactical difficulty was the fact that high intensity mechanized forces would inevitably cause unacceptable levels of collateral damage to the facilities (as well as being a huge danger to both the traitors and the imperials due to the risk of uncontrollable conflagration). Therefore it fell the 999th Penal Legion to perform wave attacks without regards to casualties until the facilities were recaptured or they were destroyed in the process.

painters notes:
Some more great products from Wasteland. I knew I wanted an very bright gaudy color to the tanks so I went with AP Demonic Yellow sprayed over a base of VAC Khaki tan. Then I went to do an mid-shading pass with the airbrush along the edges with a brown wash using it as a localized filter of sorts (one of my airbrush tricks).

Wanting to use up the last of the bottle of GW Devlan Mud I decided to use that. BIG MISTAKE. GW products of that era simply do not have the pigment to play nicely with anythign airbrush related. Tons of overspray and clogging mucking things up terribly. The pigments too thing to stick where you put it say unlike AP or Valejo washes. At least I figured that it'll just require a little extra attention with the 2nd pass of yellow color to settle that out on the flat areas. No biggie, right? Well as I kept trying to give a color pass that it kept randomly giving me green and brown tones all over from the pigment in the yellow interacting with the devlan mud underneat!!! :{[]

It was REALLLLLLLY terrible looking. Not wanting to dump the whole thing in stripper I decided to see what I could do to make those off the wall reactions work for me instead and I thought of terribly caustic chemicals and Batman-esque acme chemical plant vats and went for it. First was to go work on it with repeated uneven applications of Woodland Scenics Burnt Umber washes to break up the overspray and work as a discoloration. Then it was time to start streaking with various art store burnt sienna and prussian blue, mig productions olive green, starship filth, un white, etc. Throw on extensive chipping (chardon granite with a second pass of gunmetal). Rust it up with mig old rust and you kinda get something that kinda works in the end.

They turned out nicely in the end. Well done on making a problem work for you.

I look forward to hearing about how the penal legion go in their battles too. ;)
