But to run a normal sized campaign successfully, you'd need to put in a lot of time and also make a starting investment. Considering the fact that MoreDakka is running Vanguard Miniatures parallel to his full time job, I doubt that would really work.
However, something more smaller scale might work. There were plans for a pre-order system to finance the production of certain models. Maybe go for small Kickstarter projects for specific units. So run a kickstarter for one or two units for which you might need only a couple of hundred pounds (max 1000 - 1500). That way you'd need to invest little time in it. Besides, the risk for delays will also be greatly diminished. To see how that's done, look at the
Colony 87 projects.
Your right mate you need to invest in design work at least before setting up a kickstarter so no help there financially and your right again two jobs preclude any notion of having time to run and constantly update a kickstarter campaign and even if I could manage it i'd be out of communications for much of the day as we are not allowed phones at work and have no online access either.
The pre-order funding idea bombed due to a lack of interest from the community so i'm just left with a regular pre-order set up to help which usually generates a couple of dozen orders at most before product release anyway.
So really i'm stuck with my current set up which is utilise any and all profit from sales to pay for new models to be designed, printed and cast.
Not ideal but it's the only way I can finance new products. Almost all profit made from my first year of trading has gone back into new product generation.
