Added photos of the whole layout to my briefcase; go to page 2 to see the pics.
Tommorow will be spent making a mess with lots of sanding and filing, and hopefully you'll be able to see some more progress at the end of the day..  :;):

Bit of a bump up for this topic- I hadn't done much work on it for a while, but the weekend was nice and sunny, so I went outside and did a bit more...

I changed my plans a bit, in that to make the piece more versatile on the tabletop, I've divided it into seperate units, so I got the saw out and chopped the large base up so there are now two hill/wood sections, one piece with the FW buildings on and one one with the dish.

I also managed to finish one of the hills, so here it is..
-my mum commented that it looked like a christmas cake... ?:oo ?..parents- lol

Mmmmm....cake....

Those trees are looking good. How big are they in comparison to say a rhino or land raider?

Cheers

Looking great Storm. :)  Love the snow effect -I''ve never dared to have a go with that myself yet but yours look excellent! Any updates to the buildings yet?

Cheers! :)

Cheers guys!

..my snow effect is pretty simple: Prime with one thick layer of matt white decorators paint (GW pots are a little expensive for large areas like this ? :;): ) ..then sprinkle a little sand on it for the first texture layer, so it sticks to the drying paint.
Once that had all dried, I painted on another nice thick layer to fix the sand and smooth the surface, and on that scattered some baking powder (very fine texture, so it looks more realistic than sand at this scale...)

...That is basically it; the rocks were painted black and then drybrushed grey before the coat of white, so the layer underneath shows through to add a touch of detail.
The trees were put in last, after they had had a thick coat of white brushed over them to achieve that 'snow laden' effect.

I've nearly finished the buildings- spent a couple of hours on them last night, and they should be done tonight, barring any problems! I'll take some photos of that then, and a few better ones of the hill.

Oh, and Jimbo.. no marzipan, just delicious plasticine and polystyrene... yummy ?

EDIT: Oh, and scale-wise, the trees are about 6/7cm ish...

So it is baking soda.....

Have you managed to get it to secure to the piece well enough to use?

I found on my Logan Piece(s) that it tends to flake off even after 4 coats of varnish. Hence I'm now looking for a more durable option.

Some of it does drop, but once the worst of the loose stuff is off, it leaves what is stuck to the paint, and the texture of the sand means there are lots of little crevices it works into & doesn't come out of easily.... :)

Good luck Tuff, hope you are succesful... ? :;):

Now, I managed to finish off the buildings tile today..
I wanted a 'snow blasted' effect for the buildings; I imagine these structures are just the tips of an underground complex more away from the elements...
The drifts are modelled on with plasticine before being given the 'snow treatment' as described earlier, and buildings had a little plasticine added to roof areas and around the antenae, before being brushed over with white to look like driving snow had frozen to the walls... ?:)
