Fenris Games in the UK has this concept going for quite some time already.
The use of MDF keeps cost to similar levels as in this tutorial.

yep fenris games ones are the same, but if you are making them yourself styrene is faster. Fenris also only do 5 hole bases, but i suppose they might do 4 on enquiry?

Fenris will do custom cuts on request. I'm quite surprised they've not got a strip style base on the regular catalog

Just a quick note to say that I recently made some custom 4-hole bases using this technique, took me around 3 hours total and the only tools I needed were a battery drill and a set of mole grips in lieu of a bench clamp

The result:

such great results and such a simple design, it's almost genius.
These look great :)

Might have to knock some up this weekend, maybe bevel the edges with the dremel

be aware that the dremel spins extremely fast, you're more than likely to melt the plastic if not careful, I melted a couple of bases by drilling at high speed on my battery drill-driver so be warned! ;)
