Ouch, now it takes six Sanguinary Guard stands to make a formation? That seems a little odd.

When introduced they were 6 stands (unless old age is finally got me). Care to elucidate your feelings. It's good to hear fresh reactions.

It's more wings than I could possibly make or cut off non-EA models and stick onto Assault Marine jetpacks. They'd be so pretty but it's a daunting task!

But more seriously, it stands out because Space Marines in E:A have always had six stands in the generalist unit and 4 stands in all of the specialized ones. 2.4 even brought assault marines down to four stands minimum. Death Company, which I'd assume to be the next-best thing to Sanguinary Guard, are also four stands. Now the most elite of the specialists is also tied for hordiest unit in the list. I would have been less surprised if it had been the opposite, like a uniquely small 3 stands of expensive killiness (not that I'm suggesting that).

That was just talking about the fluff. In terms of gameplay, you seem to get quite a bit more for 350 points than you do when you take a 4-stand, 300 point Death Company Assault formation. Subtract 50 points for the Chaplain from the latter and the comparison shows 50% more stands in the Sanguinary Guard unit plus MW attacks for 40% more points. The Death Company's invulnerable 4+ save might be that much better than a normal 3+, but not always. Awesome upgrades list, too. And they can hold objectives.

I thought in the fluff there are a max of 30 SG in the chapter and they always fight as a single unit, hence 6 stands?

Really? Seems an odd restriction for a skirmish game like 40k.

To me they are just bodyguards, personally I think it'd be easier if they were just represented as 1 supcom stand but all are entitled to their preferences.

I'm not really up to date on the fluff; I only have up to the 5th edition codex, which says that there are 30 but doesn't imply that there are always 30 or that they fight together. You wouldn't play them that way in 28mm 40k, of course. Kyrt, the Honour Guard are the bodyguards. Same color, but no wings, normal weapons.

I'm more worried that Sanguinary Guard are a fairly large, hard hitting, and fast formation, in an army fast enough to give it proper support.

Which ones follow Dante round?

Sanguinary guard. This is where the list restriction of the SC character MUST be added to the SG Formation AND becomes the BTS regardless of all other formations. Basically the presence of the SG and having an SC means that Dante himself is on the field.

Even though this list if currently backburnered for the time being, batreps are totally welcome carlisimo109. Questions on formation size and synergies are always needing a hard look!

My gaming life has slipped away from me, but as soon as I get a chance I will try them!

Showing my age a bit, but I could have sworn that in 2nd ed and 3rd you fielded dante with a small group (like 5) guard. Not 30.

That was an Honour Guard. They're also painted gold, but they have normal jump packs. Sanguinary Guard were invented in 5th ed, and didn't replace the Honor Guard - both are in the 5th ed codex as units of 5.

Ok thanks. So either way, they clearly aren't always fielded in their entirety, 30 at a time... which gives some flexibility to represent them however we want (like formation upgrades, formations of 4 etc)
