Tinkering with some miniature designs. I was wondering how you would imagine the Iron Hammer is armed:

The Heavy Thunderer - Is this roughly the same weapon as seen on a Space Marine Vindicator? And if so, would the 2 attack dice mean that it is supposed to be twin barrelled?

Not really ... in the old SM1 days we called that a Grade 2 weapon. You rolled 2d6. For example, the standard Eldar plastic Falcon Mk.I had a Grade 2 Las-cannon, but only one barrel. 8)

Hi!

Actually At/SM1 called them "barrels", sort of a misnomer. Since it did not physically need to have more than one. The attack die were based on the amount of "barrels". Very confusing wording.

Such strange timing for this subject as the other day my nephew mentioned about Squats being able to take Land Raiders and previously I hadn't noticed this. When I checked out the rules I also discovered about the Iron Hammer and also the Iron Shield vehicles. Just goes to show that when I went to Gold I never really read the rules through for the army lists, I always just looked for stats and rules for stuff that I had!

Anyway after that meandering story about nothing at all, I'll leave you with a question (or two): I can see there are minis used in the Gold book. Where are they from? If no one is sure, is there a proxy anyone uses?

The models used for the Iron Hammer and Iron Shield in the Squat book are from Exodus Wars. They are the Guild Achilles and Guild Hector respectively. Though I don't think it matters what models you use, we are in a world of proxies given the game is OOP.

With regards to what the heavy/mega thunderer is like, it could be similar to the Thunderer/Demolisher Cannon, or just a bigger battle cannon.
The game has gone way past linking AD to number of barrels. Maybe the gun has a quick reload capability or maybe its shells cause an explosion that could hit multiple targets, but doesn't really work like a barrage weapon? Who knows.

Based on the description of the Iron Hammer (and despite the picture) I imagine this vehicle having a turret that is almost larger (in length & width, but not height) than the tank's body. Think of a Land Raider with a Vindicator as a turret. No, not a Land Raider. Perhaps a Leman Russ with a Thudd Gun as a turret.

Hi!

Since GW never made any "tanks", only praetorian sized vehicles, there is a lot of latitude in designing a "squat" tank.

I think the more poignant question is, how should squat vehicles look like over all.

What makes a tank say, "yeah, squats built this"?

I'm not really sure of an answer.

Just trying out something different based on Magnus' suggestion: Here's a quick mock up for a big blocky turret.

Hi!

I like this better. The look is more "distinct".

Ah, I see you went with a Baneblade with a Vindicator as a turret. Good choice, that looks really appropriate for Squat. Hmm, should we upgrade that vehicle to Super Heavy status? Probably not really, just define it at about 75% to 80% of the size of a Baneblade and we should be good.

Naw. Keep the stats as they are. The idea is to build a model that fits the stats and not the other way around. Otherwise a lot of playtesting would have been wasted :)

Hypothetically speaking:

If a set of Squat vehicles were to be produced, how many would you want of each type?

From a production standpoint, a mould casts a number of models with each spin, so if several unit types are to be included, one needs to take into account expected sales of each type, to get the ratio right.

Iron Hammer MBT
Iron Shield APC
Retributor Assault Tank
Grudgekeeper Artillery

I'm guessing a rather even distribution of the 3 regular tanks, and relatively fewer of the Grudgekeepers. Perhaps a 1/3 ratio (Eg. 3 Iron Hammers, 3 Iron Shields, 3 Retributors and 1 Grudgekeeper in a single mould - depending a bit on how many will fit in one)

Miniature availability has been a limiting factor for Squat armies so far, but if there were no limitations, how many would you pick for your average army?

Ragnarok tank minis don't get a lot of love. Perhaps they could make a good proxy for a Squat heavy tank.

I do like Warmaster Nice's tank. Stuff like that might move me to do some Squats one day.
