I'm not a fluffonaut.... can you explain why? I thought centurions, achilles and thunderfires were very strongly associated with the imperial fists as well as the siege-defence theme.....

I haven't voted as I'm unsure which to go for but I think you're generally going in a good direction with the IF and the units in it.

The new Horus Heresy books have thrown a spanner into the works of the list in a way, since they describe the IF as specialists in void warfare (with the largest fleet) as well as sieges, which doesn't fit well with your existing epic IF list which omitted spacecraft as an option.

I wonder if there's some middle way of adding a spacecraft to your IF list but still limiting the air assault/drop potential. Perhaps add a modified IF spacecraft with orbital barrage but little or no transport capacity, as an artificial list limitation to show their marines in this list style are already on the ground in defensive positions.

To avoid the kitchen sink issues why not link the list to a famous IF campaign where they undertook a major ground based siege? Perhaps it was impossible to undertake a bombardment/landing on the main stronghold - atmospheric conditions/ground based defences etc. Then the vanguard list can then still be IF but at a different campaign with different theatre conditions.

Just a reminder that I'm not slavishly following current fluff with the list....

I'm trying to use fluffy IF units (thunderfires, centurions, achilles) in a list which works in a fluffy IF manner (siege defence experts) as voted for by the community.... the list doesn't represent the IF as they are in all the background, as I'd be including Caestus, thunderhawks, spacecraft and the rest

I'm trying to work within the confines of satisfying the fluffophiles, community, and most importantly list balance which is always going to run contrary to GW because they have zero concept of list balance and/or theme, and continually release waves of new crappy models to encourage people to give them money.... unfortunately by taking this approach, I'm not going to satisfy everybody, I hope we can all accept that and try to look past the neccessary deviations from the GW fluff (which changes every few years) and even some of the community wishes, and understand that the list still plays differently enough from Codex or other chapters to be worth using, and it's still enough like Imperial Fists to satisfy those of us who love the stubborn yellow sons of Dorn

Well obviously sieges in Wh40k are only done wif a drop/air assault isn't possible. The reasons are manyfold: athmospheric conditions which makes a drop/air assault to dangerous, valuable things inside the target locations which could be to easily damaged, etc.

This is the reason this list should have only very limited air/drop elements. If you do a siege then obviously you ran out of other options.

@kyussinchains: The Thunderfire was first pictured in Ultramarines and Salamanders colours. A Salamanders army was displaed in WD in a defensive play style with Thunderfires, etc. Imperial Fists are the Terminator-telport army and now with Centurions too.

Fair enough, from what I've read the IF make considerable use of thunderfire cannons.... also I assume it's still canon that Horus himself reckoned that the luna wolves attacking a fortress defended by the IF would be a never ending stalemate and that Dorn was reckoned to be such a master of siegecraft that he was tasked with designing the defences of the imperial palace on terra?

I think that kind of overrides a few poxy thunderfire cannons myself....
