I've done a test, washing the mud and it looks good, not as dry. So next time I'll try putting the mud on earlier then washing it with the rest of the base. Not sure about highlighting though, maybe leave areas of mud unwashed to make them look dried on.

I've updated my blog with this pic and new details. The right track on the Land Raider has been washed and you can see its darker, more defined and maybe a bit wetter looking. I'm going to leave areas other than the tracks and base unwashed so that they appear as dried on mud.
