Are those Thousand Sons or Necrons?

Neither! But they are very thin. And skeletal. And live in pyramids. And like insects and arachnids.

Hey everyone!

Ok, after more interactions with shapeways, I think I have some pretty stable updates to share.

Although the printing checks seems to be becoming more stringent, most models will not be blocked outright if successfully printed before. Further check might be done, but the situation is definitely not as critical as it appeared at first.

Furthermore, shapeways is testing a function called "Print it anyway", that will allow designers (and if everything goes right, customers too) to buy prints of models even if they do not pass all the checks. They will not guarantee the perfect quality of the model, but it will allow to purchase basically any model.

This said, I've convened with shapeways not to close my shop; in the next days, I'll add to the description of my models the following, to inform all my customers of the situation:

"PLEASE NOTE: These models bear some very delicate detail, and push the limits of the printing material; sometimes it can happen that during the tests the models will result to be not printable, even though they have been printed successfully before. Should this happen, I'll do my best to solve the issues promptly and keep you updated."

With this fixed, I'll hopefully be able to get back to sculpting :)

All is well that ends well(-ish)!

In a similar vein, I've had a lot of zombie robot prints break, leading to structural beefening. Beefaroni-ing? So, while redesign is a pain in the ass, it does lead to more survivable stuff.

Hi Todd,

Thanks for that! Trouble shared is a trouble halved :)

Although now I'm melancholic, remembering the good times of the zombie robot :D

Hey everyone,

I've updated all model descriptions as agreed with Shapeways (fun times!), and everything is back on track for the time being.

All items are being printed correctly, and yesterday quite a few grand cruisers and light cruisers were completed and shipped.

I wish I had a huge reveal to show to celebrate the return to normality, but I've been very busy trying to solve these problems... I have a tiny reveal, though!

Here's a preview of a small frigate, for a new race tentatively called "Cosmic Pharaohs"; it's too small to be used in 6mm scale (around 16.6mm wide and 20.9mm tall), but I think it works as the smallest frigate of the race.

I've always seen their ships as thick, and not aerodinamical at all (and I don't really like crescent shaped vessels :\).

What do you guys think?

Hey everyone!

Boo for the cosmic pharaohs! Nobody likes them!

Ok, here's something I made at the request of a customer: for the moment they will only be an undaunted light cruiser (completed) and a lance frigate (still to do); I'll to the other ship classes, if people like them!

Together with the customer, we tried to keep an oriental style throughout the details, so dragon heads and pagoda style roofs, torii like details, shoji style walls and windows, and wings reminiscent both of traitional junk sails and dragon wings. (I didn't know anything about japanese architecture a week ago, learning new words is fun!)

Obligatory three-quarters view of the lance version:

I know after all the production problems this seems like a big F-you to Shapeways' printing checkers, but the preliminary checks gave the green light, for the time being....

Opinions, as always, welcome!

P.S.: The production is going smoothly, and ships are getting shipped regularly :)

Awesome stuff! What's wrong with the Cosmic Pharaoh stuff? Looks pretty nifty.

Thank you!

That was just a joke, they haven't been shelved; it's just that I have the attention span of a fruit fly :)

Looks very nice. I would suggest sweeping the wings forward to crescent moon/horn shapes reminiscent of samurai helmet decorations. Also, something about the pagoda-style superstructure.... Keep it for sure but it needs a little more pizzazz - maybe more obvious flares of the roof sections?

More flares on the roof (screw shapeways >:D)
Super sweet take on ship patterns. Call them the shenobi pattern or something. Imagine how sweet that would be to see an entire fleet of this style?

It's not that I want to make life easy for Shapeways, it's that I'm afraid they might refuse to print the model :)

Just to be sure I understand, what do you mean by flares on the roof? I was thinking of adding some vertical "planks", I'll try and make something this evening!

@ Jimmy: It might happen, if these encounter enough interest; for the name of the faction I was thinking something like "Rising Star"... Because, you know, rising sun, but in spaaaace!

Different scale, but it might give you some ideas...dunno how exactly, just wanted to share this with you. :)

Interesting models! I've never liked the other "samurai" marines I've seen, but those are an exception!

I've done a little more work on the Undaunted, and adapted the lance frigate to go with it.
At first, I tried estending the roof edges outwards, but the models turned out to be not printable; since I agree the roof surfaces looked a little bare, I tried to add to them some details.

@ Sawbones: I tried giving the wings a crescent shape, but they ended up getting in front of the port/starboard batteries... I have to ponder on this some more :)

Opinions, as always, welcome!
