Cut my music.

Netepic's post regarding Warmaster combined with my curiosity is inching me to pick up what I can from Ebay and the sale racks. I have heard lots of people say they like Warmaster but I haven't heard why. I also have some questions regarding how the armies are chosen.

If I pick up the rulebook, and lets say two starter sets (I always like to build two opposing armies) and I am leaning towards the Empire and Orcs, how much fun will I have. I am not interested in building 2000 point armies like what is recommended, and I have no problems playing smaller skirmish games. I am not going to invest a lot in this. . .

So if I pick up what is in the Empire box set, what is a another unit or two that will be fun to have? I like the Steam Tank. Even though everyone hates the thing in WFB, a mini version just looks great.

If I go for the Orcs, I love the Warboss on the Wyvern, but as in WFB, these kind of things are frowned on, so I am wondering if the thing is feasible in a small army.

Also, I really love the Skaven, as I think the Doom Wheel and Doom Bells look awesome, and I do like war machines. The problem is, it looks like it will cost a lot just to field something to worthy of what comes in a starter box set. Are the Skaven fun? Are the machines worth it?

Finally, I don't know how you chose armies. What is legal and not legal. Do you have to have X number of X units? Is it similar to 40k and WFB where you have to have X number of core units and so on? If so, what else could I get from the starter sets if the Steam tank and Wyvern are illegal for a small army?

Mucho thanks.

There is a minimum and maximum number of units per thousand points.  Not all units have either or both.  Typically, there are a couple core units with minimums and quite a few specialty units with maximums.

For example, for tomb kings, you have to have a minimum of 2 skeleton units and 2 skeleton archer units per 1000, with no max.  You can have up to 2 liches and (iirc) 1 each sphinx and bone giant.  Other units, like skeleton cav, have no minimum or maximum.

I could be wrong on the specific numbers, but you get the idea.

All the starter sets are legal, and I think they are all 1000 points.  You could easily trade out the steam tank and wyvern for unrestricted units, or you could blow off the restrictions and just throw them down.  Monstrous units like that tend to be in the 75-100 point range, so I seriously doubt it would hurt the game as long as you stuck sort of close to the restrictions.

Hi!

Neal, gave you the lowdown on the basics. It gives you balanced armies due to these restrictions per 1000 points, but you also need to BUY basic troops as minimums per 1000 points. Which is good since all armies need halbedier and other "basics'.

The game is good, so if you can get it cheap I would go for it.  :D

I'm just making my first real moves into warmaster myself. Its a wonderful scale to work in from a painting point of view (IMNSHO) & the game itself seems to be very good as well- far more tactical than warhammer & really forces you to take tough decisions. Having said that, my current experience is limited to participating in a demo game here and there whenever I see one at conventions etc  :D

Hi!

Nice picture Jimbo!

I saw the picture of the new emperor dragon. Pretty pricey though.

I really like that game. I was dumb not to pick it up when retailers still sold it.

Oh well....

It is very simple. I have the rulebook and I have played a pair of games. Simple mechanics, but the problems about units moving 100 cm per turn....In general what is not very good is the ammount of orders you can keep doing as long as you pass your leadership rolls. The number of orders a given unit can take should be limited to 3 IMO but appart from that it is a good game :)

As an alternative with better rules (and MUCH more difficult to understand as well, mind you) De Bellis Multitudinis (DBM) poses a more than good alternative to warmaster. In fact Warmaster was intended to draw DBM and other 15mm gamers towards WHF in words of GW employees. Not that I really trust that source, but it seems a good strategy for a subsupported game (read: specialist game).

Actually there is a DBM version with magic, orcs, elfs et al, so you can play using the warmaster minis with a better rulebook if you really get into that scale of fantasy playing. Don't get me wrong, I think armaster is a fair game, but there are better 15mm alternative rulebook out there :) For the fun of it warmaster is good. As a great rulebook it lacks quite some things.

Regards,

Xavi

I decided to avoid DBM and others in that series. For me, DMx systems are a little generic. I did venture into Vis Bellica, and there is a fantasy version of this due out soon which should be interesting. Anyway, like most others here, I just picked up a copy of the Warmaster rule book on EBay for half price. Even if I never play, it is not a bad price for a new book to read. I am more interesting in the Ancient version.

Speaking of which, has anyone had any experience with the Warhammer Ancients system?

Hi!

I decided the same as CS. I avoid the DB"x" system. Tried it, too generic for my tastes.

Neal, warhammer ancients is supposed to be quite good. I have had limited exposure to it, but I liked what I saw. The books are well done to GW's usualy high standards. You can use any minis (although they implicitly push the foundry stuff) and it prvides a nice tactical game. They have a wide variety of books for armies out by now.

I like some of the W/M figs & bitz and use them with Epic.  Never played the game ... I have a hard enough time trying to do Epic !     :oo

A friend of mine has the WAB rules and he describes them as very similar to Fantasy Battles. The rules set seems solid, but they are on a level with Warrior in terms of detail and complexity.
